Interview with Arthur T. Vancra

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both !

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I love to help people bringing their work to the next level.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: Mastering is just about bringing up the volume !

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: I would love to work with major artists such as David Guetta, DJ Snake, The Weeknd...

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: To me the best tip is to not overlook on technical stuff, the main goal is to enjoy it and trust your feelings. If you like the way something sounds it does not matter if was not made "by the book", there are no mistakes only happy accidents !

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I enjoy working on EDM, electronic music because of the power and number of details this genre has. I also love other type of course but I need to feel the beat and enjoy it (I love to dance and when I start to shake my head and want to get up and dance it means I am on the right way)

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: I bring out the best of your work !

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: As a mastering engineer, my goal is to bring a "AAA" finish to songs, meaning that I aim to make them sound as professional and polished as possible so your music can reach out next to most songs and even compete with the most known hits

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: The first step is to receive the final mix of the music from the artist or mixing engineer. This mix should be as complete and polished as possible, as the mastering process will focus on refining the overall sound of the track or album rather than making major changes to the mix. Then I listen to the mix carefully and assess its strengths and weaknesses. This may involve using specialized software or hardware to analyze the audio and identify any issues such as imbalances in the levels of different instruments or frequencies, or problems with the overall loudness of the mix. Once the assessment is complete, I will apply a variety of techniques to improve the overall sound of the mix. These may include equalization (EQ) to balance the levels of different frequencies, compression to control the dynamic range of the music, and limiting to increase the loudness of the mix without causing distortion. The final step in the mastering process is to create the final master files and deliver them to the artist or record label. These files will be in the appropriate format for distribution, such as WAV or MP3, and will be ready for commercial release.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: I try to learn from the greatest : Bob Ludwig, Emily Lazar, Dave Pensado, Chris Lord-Alge, Bernie Grundman...

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: As a mastering engineer, my work will involve optimizing the overall sound of a music track or album for commercial release. This may involve balancing the levels of individual tracks within an album, applying equalization, compression, and other forms of audio processing to improve the clarity and punch of the music, and ensuring that the finished product meets industry standards in terms of loudness and overall sonic quality. I am also be responsible for creating and delivering the final master files in the appropriate format for distribution, such as WAV or MP3 files.
