Interview with Lauran Marie Starr

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: My studio setup is real intimate. Anytime I'm in a session I call it a Therapy Session. I have LED lights and the color depends on what mood I'm in or song I'm about to create. I have an Interface (Presonus Audiobox iTwo), 15" Apple MacBook Pro Retina 2.7 GHz Quad Core i7 , Studio monitors, a microphone (Presonus M7) and I work on Logic.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: I record myself and when I first got my equipment I thought I was going to plug it in and go. It's a process and the pieces of the puzzle don't fall into place overnight so enjoy the journey and give yourself grace. Your gift will make room for you.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: I work on jingles, theme songs, and songs for other creatives working on their EP's/Projects etc.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: That I am teachable. I love what I do and I'm confident but there's always room to grow.

  9. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  10. A: I recently worked on jewelry jingles for four consultants and I had complete creative control over each and they all loved the end result.I wrote, arranged, record myself on my set and that felt amazing!

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: I'm currently working on an EP entitled Therapy Sessions Vol.1 and building a catalog for submissions for other artists and television shows.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that it's quick. Creating is very time consuming but when you love what you do that doesn't matter.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: I would love to work/write with Jazmine Sullivan, Eric Bellinger, Brandy and Beyonce and TyDollaSign because each one of these artists make great music that inspires.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: Kim Burrell, Lauryn Hill, Eric Bellinger, Jazmine Sullivan, Beyonce and a host of others!

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I do jingles, theme songs and write/ collaborate with other creatives on their projects as well as my own.

  21. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  22. A: Brandon Yancy, Isadore Nior, Dren

  23. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  24. A: My promise to my clients is I will provide quality work that will compliment your project or business in a timely fashion.

  25. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  26. A: I love being creatively free and being able to make people smile and feel good through music.

  27. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  28. A: I typically ask what service they are interested in, their budget and the time frame they need their product.

  29. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  30. A: My only advice is to be sure of what you would like for me to create for you. Provide any inside information or motto's you would like for me to include if you have a business you would like me to write a jingle for. I want the final product to represent you and your brand.

  31. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  32. A: My studio equipment so I can create in a beautiful therapeutic space.

  33. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  34. A: My career path initially was to be one of the biggest artists in the world. As I grew up I fell in love with different aspects of my craft and now feel limitless. I've been singing my whole life and recording since the age of nine so over 20 years.

  35. Q: How would you describe your style?

  36. A: My style is very jazzy and soulful but diverse. I listened to different genres of music growing up due to growing up in a diverse family and neighborhood.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: I bring catchy soulful melodies with relatable lyrics to match.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: My work process is me first going through tracks that are sent to me. If I'm working on a jingle I speak with my client about the vibe they are going for then I pick out three tracks for them to choose from. If they don't like those three (they usually like a track out of the first three) I pick three more. Once the track is chosen I usually come up with a melody first. I'm a melody writer so I usually record that first then I let the words flow.
