Ed Chivers on SoundBetter

I love tone and texture, and focus on bringing the emotions of the song out in the mix. Recent songwriting and production credits on HBO's 'Succession', Nintendo, skate/surf videos Two recent records that I produced and mixed have been BBC 6Music Album of the Day.

I can help you get the best out of your tracks, whether you recorded them at home on a 4-track or in a big-ass studio.

I have loads of hardware that I run sounds through such as ARP 2600, EMI compressor limiters, Space Echos, spring reverbs, weird modular synths and dusty old tape machines.

When it comes to mastering, I try to do as little to change the mix as possible. The most important part of mastering is having a new set of ears on your mix, and I can give you feedback on your mix before we master it, to get the best result possible.

When I'm not in the studio I'm onstage playing in my bands AK/DK, and Fujiya & Miyagi. I also lecture in Music Production.

Ed is a great technical mixer and has excellent creative instincts. He has a handle on the advantages of software as well as the capabilities analog gear, which means he was able to mix and match the elements to create sounds and textures that are warm and modern. He clearly heard my requests and brought in new ideas that made my suggestions better. Looking forward to working with him again.

Interview with Ed Chivers

  1. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  2. A: My background as a musician and songwriter is a critical skill in producing, mixing and mastering - understanding the song structure and arrangement is key to getting a mix that compliments the song.

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: Before starting to work on a track I will discuss what ideas the client has for their work, listen to the material and develop an understanding of the intention of the music. Only then will I start work - usually run tracks through analogue outboard, before finishing the mix in the box, giving the mojo from the outboard together with ability for exact recall-ability of software.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: A hybrid of software and analogue outboard. I have a collection of vintage synths and also one-off DIY noise makers and processors that all bring colour and mojo to productions I work on.

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: I love Dave Fridmann's sound that he brings to records - big fat squishy compression and layers of electronics and real instruments. BJ Burton's work on Low's Double Negative is astonishing in it's brave originality. Silvia Massy's sonic explorations with artists are a constant inspiration.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: Editing tracks, pitch correcting vocals and then mixing.
