Ryan Lipman on SoundBetter

Ryan Lipman is a Mixer/Producer/Engineer based in Los Angeles, CA. He's been fortunate enough to work with such artist as Jamestown Revival, Glen Campbell, and Brian Setzer. He got his start working under the amazing mix engineer, Joe Zook, but now works out of his own studio in Los Angeles.

With over a decade as a professional engineer, Ryan brings a certain panache to projects he works on(yeah, I said 'panache'. ha!). As someone who's dedicated to his craft as a mix engineer, Ryan works hard to make your music become fully realized. Under Joe Zook, he was able to work with some amazing artists such as OneRepublic, Modest Mouse, One Direction, Serena Ryder, Andy Grammer, and Colbie Caillat to name a few.

Ryan's current studio is Pro Tools based with an emphasis in using specific outboard gear in a "hybrid" setup.

I can honestly say Ryan exceeded my expectations on every level. Professionalism, attention to detail, technical and creative ability, responsiveness, everything. He truly invested himself in my project as if it were his own, which is so extraordinarily rare. A million thanks for realizing and surpassing my vision! Definitely now my first call.

He is the real deal. Can't say enough good things about my experience with him.
He mixed one song for me....I'd love to have him track and produce a whole project for me...I'm going to save up for that! Demeanor...he is laid back and no ego trips...but very, very to the point and professional. read his interview at Soundbetter....it is all true. His goal...your satisfaction! Great mixer/great guy

Over the course of the last year we have gone through three mix engineers from Los Angeles to Atlanta and have always been disappointed. Then we came across Ryan, we are so pleased by the results in every way. Ryan actually gets it! He is hands down the best mix engineer out there. He really does mix for the song!

Interview with Ryan Lipman

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm really proud of the new Jamestown Revival album. I was fortunate enough to see the project through from Co-producing, Engineering, and Mixing.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Charlie Kramsky, Andy Freeman, Dan Piscina.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. Because.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: My promise is to always give every client my best. I don't just work until I'm satisfied, I work until they're happy.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: What can I say, I get to listen to music all day, and people pay me for it.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Q: How much ya bench?! A: At least 28 or so, am I right?!

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: The biggest misconception about mixing, in general, is that having a laptop with Pro Tools can make you a mixer. Those of us that do this for a living have a spent long, hard hours striving to get better everyday.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Let's talk. Conversation always clears up in misconceptions or assumptions.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Pro Tools(with UAD plugins), MasterRoom XL-305, CAPI FD312 preamps, Telefunken 251, AEA 440.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: Went to school. Lived in Austin for a couple of years doing country music and indie rock. Moved to LA. Worked on better projects. Apprenticed under Joe Zook. Now on my own. The End. No complaints here.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Always changing. Always learning something new.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: David Ramirez. I think he's one of the most talented songwriters out there today.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Less is more.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: It really varies from day to day. Anything from Pop, (Indie)Rock, Folk/Americana, Singer Songwriter, Country, etc.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Flippin' Pancakes.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: Objectivity. A fresh perspective or a new way of envisioning things.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: For mixing, I like to have plenty of conversation ahead of time to really figure out the direction the artist is looking to go. From there, I listen to the rough mix alongside other reference tracks to formulate a game plan before I even sit down with the session. After I send a first mix, I'll do as many revisions as necessary to make the client happy.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: My setup is a "hybrid" setup with Pro Tools HD12 and a handful of select pieces of outboard gear setup as analog inserts.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: Tchad Blake, Joe Zook, Dave Cobb, John Congleton, and Blake Mills too name a few.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: I'm mostly hired as a mix engineer. When I get hired as a tracking engineer, I'm mainly brought on to work closely alongside an artist and "co-produce". It's a blast to do this and see a project through from inception to the end.
