Blake Swims on SoundBetter

I'll write lyrics to your melodies, compose melodies for your lyrics, or even deliver a full song for your track. Having studied the art of songwriting at Berklee College of Music and worked as a full time Songwriter and Producer in Los Angeles, you can trust me with this delicate process.

I have years of experience with writing for artists signed to major labels such as Warner, Sony and TEN Music Group. I also write for my own artist project and am a trained vocalist with my own studio if you need me to demo the songs that I write for you.

I specialize in writing for pop but my lyrical abilities range across all genres.

I fully understand the nuances of word placement, developing prosody (where the music and the lyrics communicate together) and using the arch of a melody to create desired emotions.

Having recently collaborated with major producers such as Noble (Beyonce) and AOBeats, artists such as Mark Johns, and songwriters such as Rollo Spreckley (Noah Cyrus & Ava Max) from APG and Atlantic Records, I am confident in my abilities to work collectively with other creatives in order to make a song the best that it can be.

Blake was great to work with. I reached out and told him that I wanted someone to really create a full song for me since I am jumping back into music, and he was so helpful and really listened to me and my wants for the song. He was a pleasure to work with! Highly recommend!

Blake Sayer is an amazingly talented songwriter and producer! His lyrics are so emotive and his melodies are so unique, yet still catchy. He works really efficiently and always meets deadlines. He understands the writing process more than anyone I have ever worked with before in my whole life. I highly recommend hiring him for your project!

Blake has one of the most unique songwriting styles I've ever heard- in the best way possible. I always find his lyrics to be so original and I love how he manages to really fit them perfectly with whatever melody he's paired them with. His background in production really helps him bring his songs to life and I think he's really found a cool niche in the "experimental pop" world. Can't wait to work with him again!

Blake is one of the best songwriters I've gotten a chance to work with. His unique sense of melody combined with his brilliant way of storytelling results in wonderfully crafted songs that perfectly reflect the emotional state of the story that's being told. Every time I have worked with him, he has outdone himself delivering beautiful songs. I could not recommend him enough!

Interview with Blake Swims

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Yes, I know Pedro Calloni and would highly recommend him as a mix engineer. I use him for all of my own songs for my artist project.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I have been writing songs throughout my life. I have played piano and guitar since I was a young child and use these skills when writing. I graduated with a songwriting degree from Berklee college of Music in 2016. Since then, I have worked as a full time songwriter in New York and Los Angeles.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: I consider my strongest skill to be writing lyrics. I have a background in poetry. I have always been fascinated by the way word placement within a musical phrase effects how it is received. Thanks to my background as a vocalist, I have a natural instinct for when one word is more "singable" than another. This helps me combine poetry to music in the smoothest way so that it feels as if the melody was made for the lyrics and vice versa.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Songwriting is a very delicate and personal process. It's important for a song not to feel generic and it's especially important for a writer not to become a 'songwriting factory', churning out the same lines all the time. I always write with an honest and personal approach so that each song is unique and relatable to listeners.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: Often, a client will send me a recording of a melody (sometimes with an idea for a lyrical concept) and I will write lyrics that fit in the melodic frame. I also often do the same process in reverse, where clients send me lyrics and I write the vocal melody and the music on piano or guitar. When writing toplines, a producer will send me a track, sometimes with a brief with references for what kind of topline they want. I will then record myself singing the topline that I write and send them a demo. I am also able to fully vocal produce myself if needed for the track.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: I am a huge fan of Joni Mitchell and her incredible way of using lyrics to tell stories. I find Billie Eilish's expressive melodies and raw lyrical content inspiring too. And I often draw inspiration from James Blake and the way that he uses his vocals as an instrument in his production style.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: I write lyrics for a given melody or compose a melody (and the chords, using my keyboard or guitar) for someone else's lyrics. I also write toplines (melodies and lyrics) for tracks that producers send me.
