Alessia Labate on SoundBetter

Hey there! I'm Alessia, a 21-year-old Milan-based singer/songwriter, topliner, producer and musician. I play some instruments, I produce on Ableton Live, I record myself and I'm an expert vocal editor. My tone is naturally pop and fits most commercial genres; I record myself and do all the editing: I always deliver ready-to-mix vocals.

- Songwriting: melody writing, Lyrics writing, I like co-writing
- Recording, Editing, Comping, Tuning vocals / acoustic guitars.
- Production: I can produce demos / make simple arrangements
- Mixing: I can mix vocals and acoustic guitars, I can premix my arrangement.
- of course Singing: I give the best performance for the song and I record harmonies.

I'm usually hired to work on POP / EDM / HOUSE / GARAGE / TRANCE / TROPICAL as Topliner/vocalist, but I really enjoy experimenting with my songwriting and vocal style.

I grew up in my dad studio playing with cables, instruments and his huge analog mixer and whatching him do his magic. He passed on his passion to me. I started singing at 8, playing at 11, writing at 15. At 18 I started recording/editing myself to build my demo reel, and shortly after I started working on songwriting gigs with producers from all around the world and having sessions with emerging artists in Rome and Milan.

Spinnup wrote a beautiful article about my story, read in here:

Interview with Alessia Labate

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Digital. Easier to carry around

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: I'm not a producer, I mean I can arrange a track but I can't finish a record.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I've been singing ever since, but I seriously started making music 5 years ago. at 12 I did my 1st tv experience, at 17 I did The Voice, at 18 I did a songwriting course at CET (prestigious italian songwriting school). After Diploma I moved to the city and started working on my demos, and then writing for other people.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: POP but edgy.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: The list is too long...

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: try to use what's already good.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I start from the client's requests and references and make sure they truly know what they want; if not, we can find references together. Having a starting point/reference is really important because not having them might make all of us waste precious time and energy; also, we're more likely to successfully finish the track earlier than what expected. It usually takes me several small sessions to finish a song, because I keep the client updated with all the changes I make and wait for their feedback before doing anything else. Once the song is fully written I record final vocals and do all the editing in 1/2 sessions. I usually start from the melody, then lyrics, then recording and editing.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: My home studio setup is smart and always evolving. My gear: Tascam US 2x2, Aston Spirit Microphone, Line6 PodHD500x, AKG k271 MKII, Shure SM58, Eko Mia CDWEQ acoustic guitar, AKG perception 120, Fender Stratocaster USA, Ibanez semiacoustic guitar, KORG microkey 49, ROLI seaboard block, Akai MPK mini MKII, IK Multimedia iLoud micro monitor, Akai LPK25. M-AUDIO axiom mini 32 air, Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. My computer is an ASUS VivoBook Pro.

  17. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  18. A: I've been working on my project and collaborating with amazing producers from all around the world. I do writing camps every chance I get.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: As a topliner/singer I bring a pop, girly, honest, intimate and energetic touch and involving beautiful harmonies. As a vocal editor I shape the vocals to their best.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: I usually am hired as topliner: I write the topline melody, the lyrics, I perform the song and I do my editing and harmony arrangement and sometimes I mix my vocals. I'm also hired to edit vocals and record harmonies/dubs to existing songs.

  23. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  24. A: Good quality!

  25. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  26. A: I can work everywhere and have fun in the meanwhile. Songwriting is also a good therapy and a way to connect with people.
