Pete White on SoundBetter

I have a unique background in both musical theater and pop!

Originally from the UK, I worked for over a decade as a musician and music director for musical theatre. I conducted shows in London’s West End, toured extensively, and worked internationally with shows including Les Misérables, Hairspray, and Kinky Boots.

In 2017 I moved to Los Angeles to focus on songwriting and producing, and have since worked with many independent artists and songwriters both in the studio and onstage.

I now specialize in working with musical theater performers who also want to write and record their own songs, and with musical theater composers who need compelling and high quality recordings of their work. My clients include Aimie Atkinson (Original West End Cast 'Six'), UK girl group SVN, Arun Blair-Mangat (Original West End Cast '& Juliet'), Actor/Comedian Clayton Farris, and Composer Jennifer Lucy Cook.

Ok... This was fun! Pete took a chance on me and sent me a well written song to drum on! What fun!
The tracks that Pete sent were dialed and the song played itself! He was quite a pleasure to work with and for. Easy to communicate with, was quick to respond and easy to follow!
Thank you, Pete! Let's do it again... Cheers, Dennis

Pete is a remarkable producer, multi-instrumentalist, and a truly awesome person to work with. In my experience working with him, he is very intuitive to what an artist’s vision is for their song. He offers ideas and insight throughout the process to bring that vision to life musically.

I have been fortunate to work with Pete for almost 3 years now. I have mastered several of Pete’s productions and mixes and absolutely love working on them. The creativity and musicianship is amazing. The depth he adds with elements in the production as well as the mix are things I find myself enjoying and noticing while I’m listening down to the tracks. I would 100% trust Pete with my songs!

Pete is easily the best producer I've ever worked with. I've had several demos and songs produced by Pete and he never ceases to impress me. Not only can he play a ton of instruments, but he adds new textures and atmospheres to my songs that I could never imagine - I am constantly blown away by his talent. He's a great guy and fun to be around, plus his studio is a vibrant and exciting place to create. He's a musical wizard and I always look forward to watching him work his magic.

Pete is the first producer I have ever worked with, and I am so grateful that I got to have the experience that I did. He communicates so well and prepares a lot before each session, and he motivated me with the amount of care he put into our track. He was a wonderful person to work with as a first experience because he is so patient and open to trying anything. My favorite part about working with him was hearing his opinions and suggestions, and feeling heard when I gave my own. I could be completely honest with him and we had a lot of fun when we discovered sounds we both loved.

I honestly can't do justice in writing with how great Pete White is to work with!
I basically had the bare outline of a song, and he helped me every step of the way into transforming it into a song that I am proud of. He is skilled in playing multiple instruments and producing, but also takes the time to understand your personal vision for the song. He goes above and beyond to include you in as much of the process as possible, and is amazing about keeping a constant flow of communication. I would recommend working with Pete 10 out of 10!

Pete is an expert at taking the raw, unstructured soul of a song, tweaking it in small ways, and bringing out the narrative more fully. On several of my original works, the songs feel more themselves after he's worked on them. He is also a master at figuring out which instruments best compliment a song, whether that is ballad piano or funky guitar, and he can play both masterfully. I highly recommend!!

I cannot say enough great things about Pete. He is completely attuned to my vision as an artist while bringing ideas to the table I couldn’t have imagined. We quickly developed an easy short hand that has made for a hugely collaborative experience. His ability to play and compose for a multitude of instruments keeps bringing my tracks to a new level, and his attention to detail tops his work off with a polish.

Pete is a fantastic producer -- he's a truly phenomenal multi-instrumentalist, so it was like was getting four session musicians (virtuoso guitar, bass, percussion, AND piano!) included in the price of my track. He's amazing at having the vision for what the song could be even just from a simple voice memo demo. And, he clearly cares really deeply about doing his best work and making sure I was as pleased with the result as possible. I couldn't recommend him highly enough, and I really look forward to working with him again!

Interview with Pete White

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: Personally I'm drawn to anything folk-influenced, but I have played and recorded in virtually every style of music. I think all music is ultimately built from the same building blocks, and playing a range of styles deepens my understanding of all genres in a way that specialization can't.

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: Production and mixing in my home studio, alongside live work, mostly in musical theater

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I was a music director for musicals for many years, conducting a wide range of shows such as Les Mis, Hairspray, Kinky Boots. Then in 2017 I moved to LA to focus on composing and production.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: "Folk James Blake"

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I love Lizzy McAlpine's writing and voice!

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Combining real instrumentation with modern production techniques

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: Simple but high quality recording chain, and I have a bunch of guitars, a banjo, ukulele, Appalachian dulcimer, keyboards, upright piano, percussion, and other fun bells and whistles (literally!) on hand.

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: Digital plug-ins are of such high quality today, I feel they are a better investment of money.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Have as clear idea as you can for what you want your songs to sound like. It might seem that if you don't give a producer any direction or references, then they can be more creative, but actually the reverse is true. I take great pride in being able to execute the artist's vision, AND then also bringing things to the table that they hadn't thought of. That's when it really feels like a collaboration.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: Sorting through the song's structure, tempo and key as needed. Recording a guide piano/guitar track and vocals. Discussing reference tracks. Then I'll often start with the chorus and build out a draft arrangement of that, to make sure the artist and I are on the same page with style and instrumentation. Then building out the rest of the arrangement, and somewhere towards the end of that recording final vocals. I almost always mix my own projects, but use a separate mastering engineer do the mastering.
