Shaley is an incredible artist. The job I posted was quite an experimental and emotionally challenging song. She really descended deeply into it, staying incredible close to the original idea but adding a lot of her own (good stuff!) , never drifting away from the intended spirit of the song. She understands music and understands that ‘god is in the detail’.

Interview with Shaley Scott
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Indie-Pop with a twist of Soul.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My biggest project to date, was working with Sony Pictures. I sang in the animated Smurfs movie, starring Julia Roberts and Demi Lovato, which hit theaters last summer. That was an example of me getting a job, because I was able to make my voice EXACTLY how the producers wanted it. They had tried two artists before me, but those artists weren't able to get the sound Sony wanted, in their voice. My knowledge and experience helped me navigate my voice--to get the performance they wanted.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a sound proof home studio, with a Mac that's running Protools. I am currently using the Blue Baby Bottle SL Microphone - Cardioid. It works very well with my voice, and I've had nothing but compliments using it. I play piano and guitar, which helps in the songwriting process, as well. I record all my own vocals, which let's me have a faster turn around time, rather than relying on someone else to help record.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to co-write/work with Dolly Parton and Justin Timberlake.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am writing 2 original songs for a Christmas movie, airing on the Ion Channel, this holiday season.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. There just isn't much reason for analog anymore, other than to be cool. There are so many analog plug-ins that get the exact same sound. I do love the analog sound and feel to things, though. But, these days, that can be duplicated.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Top Quality, creativity, and good communication.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What's not to like?! Anytime you can get paid to do what you love to do--then you are winning. I love the fact that I can wake up everyday and work on music, because not everyone can do that. It makes me happy.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I only do pop music.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I would ask for examples, as well as their expectations on a time frame. Cost can be negotiable with each project, as well.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as specific as you can when describing the job you want done...give examples, and don't be afraid to ask questions.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am very productive as a session singer, I work fast, and have an ear for harmonies and top lines. I love to sing in different styles...as my voice can adapt to almost any style/genre. I don't like to limit myself to just one type of music. I can also help with, and co-write lyrics and melodies. I am a well-rounded musician, who works hard and takes every job seriously.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I would say my forte is how I can make my voice any style...which some singers simply cannot do. It is a great skill to have. I am also very good with writing hooks.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I think all I would need is a guitar and a mini keyboard to be happy. Can I bring my Mac? I guess I'll need a generator too....Lol I would at least need to LISTEN to music, as well.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I originally only wanted to be a performer...but, now I've gotten into songwriting and publishing, and it's something I think I could have a great future in. I really want to move into song placement and writing for other artists. But, singing will always be my first love.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Pop....but, have recently been getting into Country music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Vocals--I've just been singing for so long.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It depends on the project. With singing, I am a very fast learner and can lay down vocals typically very quick. I have always done well with adding extra harmonies to a project, and doubling. As for songwriting, it all varies. I am able to write melodies over existing tracks and chords--as well as add lyrics, if needed. I am flexible, and I enjoy many parts of being a musician.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired from so many different artists. I loved Tori Amos, Dolly Parton, Queen, The Rolling Stones, Prince, the list goes on and on. Again, I really enjoy being a part of multiple genres.
