Interview with Niall Flynn (GB studio)

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Loved the George Michael 'symphonica' record. The chance to work with Phil Ramone .My role was pro-tools comping of live shows and vocals, tuning and mixing.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am putting together a George Michael live record and other bits of his work for future releases.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: love both...preferred analog...but love both

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I love listening to music...what could be better?

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: The biggest misconception is that anything is fixable. If something has been recorded poorly or has really awful sounds then its better to fix it first before trying to mix it.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: I like to get peoples influences...I like to know what they have been listening to! Get a sense of where they are headed with they're music.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Years of professionalism at the high end of the music industry brings a different level of experience, knowledge and care to the work ethic...if that's what you're looking for ! then.."i'm your man"

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Mainly pop music ,soul, acoustic solo artists or club stuff

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Does it have power there? it probably doesn't...being that I would probably need a solar powered device to charge everything. My laptop, heaphones, any USB powered interface and a microphone(something sturdy) and my solar charger!!

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I guess almost 30years now. I started in 1990 I think in Trevor Horns sarm studios in London. Moved with George Michael to his private studio in 1995.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Just a mixture of the people I worked with and learned from...they were all good to learn from...all quite different

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: That's a tricky question. I've worked with a lot of people I wanted to....Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood mac because I loved his solo stuff and his kinda quirky writing style and the album "tusk" was pretty groundbreaking at the time recording wise.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Hire me and i'll share 2...

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Mixing and production...I've always enjoyed mixing but I really like remixing songs also....I love starting something and then seeing the end result...it is difficult sometimes but worth it...

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: I bring the years of experience I have slowly gathered over too many years to remember...The experience that you gain working at the level I have for 25years is what I bring...

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: Work process changes between projects depending on what i'm given and the amount of stuff to scan through. But its mainly about being organized, taking the time to set up the project so that when I start I can just dive in without getting stuck later on.....

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: In the studio I have two separate spaces with different monitor setups. One logic and one pro-tools setup for mixing. I use my Apollo 8 with my trusty UAD plugins mainly. I have outboard compressors and eq's but they're mainly for warming sounds up these days or overdubbing.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: I worked with Phil Ramone on the George Michael 'symphonica" record and he was truly inspiring. To see how an old pro approached his records is more than you could ask for.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: Mixing mainly...but I like to re-program sounds if stuff isn't working in the mix. I like vocal production also.
