Nathanael Bohnet on SoundBetter

Are you in a Post Hardcore, Metalcore, or Nu Metal band? Do you have material ready to go, but need someone to mix and master it so that it is ready for release? I am your guy! I specialize in Core and Nu Metal, and my goal is to make sure you get a mix you and your fans will be stoked on.

Hi! I’m Nate. I have been working within the Albertan music scene for over a decade as a songwriter, live sound tech, producer, and audio engineer. Throughout those years I have learned a lot about the industry and have learned a very crucial thing about an artist's release.

That is that mixing and mastering are the final steps in the process of making your music sound amazing

It can be the difference between looking back on the project with pride in a few years and looking at it with regret

It can be the difference between getting heard and placed on a bunch of playlists or getting ignored

It can be the difference between getting better show opportunities or playing the same local venue to the same 15 people

There are thousands of new bands releasing music online every day. No one wants to add another unpolished song mix to the pile.

Want to be proud of your work?

Want to stand out?

Want to have people actually take your music seriously?

Throw me a message and lets talk about your next release!

While recording my EP with Nathanael Bohnet i was met only with professionalism, respect for his client, and raw technical skill. He did a fantastic job on my EP, and it was Very affordable. He's definitely earned the rest of my business.

Interview with Nathanael Bohnet

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The Invicta Heights ep that was just released would have to be the one I am most proud of. My bands last ep hit over 100 k streams in under a year which was nice, but working with that band over the pandemic, providing tips to them on how to get the best recording for me to work with, reamping the guitars, and getting the result I did with the mix and master was a great experience.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: I have a live room that is capable of recording drums as well as bands in a live scenario. I run mics into my Focusrite 18i20. For guitars I usually track DI guitars, but I do have the ability to mic cabs (though at this point in time I do not have an amp that I would consider record worthy)

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I am currently working on my bands follow up ep. A band I just finished working with released the ep we worked on together and I am stoked on the response it is getting.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Not yet, I am new to this platform but I would love to meet more people.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: I like a combination of both if I can get away with it. I like to mix in the box but I try to use analog pre amps on my drums because I love the warm rich sound that they add to the mix

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I promise that I will make sure you are happy with the end result and that it comes out how you envisioned it.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: I love bring other peoples songs to live and helping immortalize them.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Can you tune our drums if we use them? Yes, yes I can

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: It takes a lot longer then you think to setup a live room for recording, I dont just keep things the same.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: What style of music do you play? How many people are in your project? How many songs are you looking to record? Do you require Live Drums? How do you want the songs to sound?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Practice your stuff. Know it like the back of your hand. You will save yourself a boat load of grief and stress while recording.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: If we are not counting the computer I would have a set of A7X Monitors, 1 sm 57, 1 sennheiser condesor mic, a focusright 2 channel interface, and a xlr cable.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I have been working in audio for about 8 years now. I started dabbling in recording in 2010-2011, and started doing sound for live events regularly around 2013. I then started recording live bands as well as my bands in 2014, but didnt really dive head first into it until 2016, in which I went hard into online education and mixing as much as I could to hone my skills.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: I like to create clear punchy mixes.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: I would love to work with Devin Townsend. I feel he has such a way of expressing himself that is unique, and I feel there is a lot I would learn from working alongside him.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Get it right at the source

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: I generally work on a variety of metal and hardcore, as well as Hip Hop

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: I believe my strongest skill is my vocal production

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: I like to think I bring an open mind and motivational drive to help the artist bring out what they need to create what they want to create.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: -Live Pre Pro (run through each song) -Find tempos (if not already provided) - Record Guitar Scratch Tracks -Have band practice to scratch tracks -Record Drums -Edit Drums -Record Guitars -Edit Guitars -Record Bass -Record Vocals -Add Extra FX and post production (if needed) -Mix and Master a song -Get that mix approved -Mix the rest of the record

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Devin Townsend, Jens Borgen, Joel Wanasek, Eyal Levi, Billy Decker, Joey Sturgis, Nolly Gutgood, Daniel Bergstrand

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I provide Recording, Mixing, and Mastering services
