Interview with SilverDollar

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: June 2017 I released 2 EP's only a week apart. There was a nice duality between the 2 projects in style, tone, discography, and concept. The 1st one (entitled "One Day...") dropped with 5 chill songs that featured my vocals singing over wavy beats; then just 7 days later I released the next EP (entitled "Day One.") on which I spit fast hard bars over harder energetic beats.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I have a concept album that is in its later stages. I'm just waiting until I am completely satisfied with the album conceptually, and I know that it all pieces together perfectly stylistically.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital. I admittedly don't have much experience with analog equipment, but I don't know the upside of using it. My DAW can do just as much as analog, and I like be able to everything I'm using on one screen.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: You will not get a "good enough" attitude. I'm not lazy with my mixing. I don't like to take shortcuts. Every song I work on is its own masterpiece in its own way, so I treat it as such.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love music. I love making music. I love the feeling of walking away from another artist's project knowing that I had a significant role in whether it turned out to be a hit or a flop. I get to hear different styles and ideas coming from artists that should probably be much more popular than they are.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How did you learn to mix and master so well and so fast? I've been doing this for many years now. I've gained a ton of experience by working with many different artists, so I know how to achieve the sound I'm looking for, and how to combat typical obstacles that may show up.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That just because I charge low prices, I must be an amateur or just not very professional. I keep low prices because I choose to in order to be a quick, reliable, consistent option for lower-budget musicians.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What type of project are you currently working on? Is there a certain sound you're going for? Do I have free range to add effects to your songs as I see fit (recommended for best results)?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: You're getting much more than what you pay for. I have never had an unhappy customer, and 9/10 times they are more than happy with the 1st version I send of the finished product. Many people tell me that I should charge much higher prices (given my speed and quality), but I like the idea of being a producer / engineer that most up and coming artists can turn to for quick and high quality service (even on a low budget).

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I am a perfectionist, so I won't feel comfortable with calling a song complete until I've listened through it multiple times on every method of audio playback available. My skills are most utilized when I am given free range to mix a song how I feel it would sound good. I am particular about what types of effects I use, and I listen closely for places to add ear-catching VOX FX to give the song a more personal feel. Once my hands touch another artist's project, I feel as though it becomes partly my own creation as well; thus, I treat every song I work with as if it were my own.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My laptop, speakers, mic, acoustic shield, and pop filter. That's all I need.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I took an interest to making music when I was about 10 years old. I began writing my own lyrics and soon acquired FL Studio where I have been constantly learning to create my own instrumentals to record over.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Many people have described my style as not having a style -- I like to dabble in a little bit of everything. As both a producer and an artist, I like to take facets of multiple styles of music and blend them together to create sounds that are not common.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: One of my career goals is to be able to one day work with The Weeknd. He has been my favorite artist of all time for the last few years now. I love his style and his voice, and his creativity is unparalleled in his song structure and videography. He is simply an artistic genius, and I feel like we could really create some incredible music together.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: I think one of the most important things to teach yourself as a producer, artists, or virtually any other label is don't be afraid to experiment. Trying new things is how you learn new things.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work with hip-hop/rap and R&B artists; however, I have worked with pop and other sub-genres.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is my perfectionist mindset. Because of it, I am willing to go through every second of a song listening for ways it can be better, and I won't move if I hear anything out of place in the slightest.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Once I start working on a song, I don't like to stop. I typically finish mixing and mastering a song in less than one full day; sometimes I may sit with it longer if I feel I can add more to the mix (like vocal effects, etc.)

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have been using FL Studio for over a decade. I use my laptop which is hooked up to a pair of Klipsch industry-standard speakers, Hype USB mic with double-layer pop filter, and an acoustic shield for negating unwanted noise and frequencies.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Mike Will Madeit, Kendrick Lamar, and other industry leaders.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: My mist common form of work comes from mixing and mastering artists' songs -- whether 1 song or an entire album. I also create beats for artists' projects very often.
