I am Greg Abate and Neon Audio is my mix studio. Mixing is a demanding task requiring both halves of the brain. Technical mastery is combined with an innate creativity and musicality to maximize the impact of song on a listener. I transform a collection of recorded tracks into a SONG with emotional impact.

I use a powerful hybrid workstation of analog and digital processing to deliver analog depth and dimension in my mixes while maintaining modern efficiency. My studio resides in a large (21'x13'x9') acoustically tuned room for exceptional playback. Below you can see a selected list of the world class gear that I use every day.

Though the gear is secondary to my experience and ears. I've been recording and mixing for over a decade, and the most important skill I've learned is how to listen, to the music and my clients. One of my favorite parts of mixing is collaborating with artists to reach their vision. I often bring a lot of ideas to a mix, and the feedback of my clients spurs better ideas. Together we craft an engaging, affecting mix.

I also do mastering and stem mastering for other mix engineers. For my own mixes, I prefer to bring in a dedicated mastering engineer with a fresh perspective. I've partnered with Telegraph Audio in Portland, OR to give my clients the ideal option of a separate mastering engineer, yet all very affordable with the discount I receive. Telegraph handles digital and vinyl mastering for all genres of music.

For local clients or session work, I have recording options to meet any need, ranging from world class recording studios to overdub setups.

Please get in touch, as I would love to chat about your music and any upcoming projects!

Greg, on point. He took my track and enhanced everything about it. His unique touch actually made me rethink how I approach composing altogether. Easy to work with and experienced. The proof however is whether or not I would work with Greg again and the answer is yes. Looking forward to working with Greg again immediately.

Greg was a pleasure to work with! He was very understanding and flexible with what I wanted. I had a song that I was unhappy with the mix with and I shared with him what I wanted and he told me exactly what he had planned on doing with the track and executed it all. He understood what I wanted and was very professional and quick!

My band hired Greg at Neon Audio to mix and master our six song EP. Throughout the process he did a great job of communicating with us and listening to our feedback on his mixes. He knows the technical side of sound engineering and has an ear for the creative aspects.

Greg Abate of Neon Audio was a great communicator, helping me through some technical issues with the song he mixed for me. He was responsive, flexible, and best of all the end product sounded fantastic.

I hired Greg to rework some covers I had been working on to give them more nuance and space in the recording in preparation for an original album I'm working on. Greg was very communicative and took feedback very well and had lots of suggestions that were useful. His skills match my sensibilities as a songwriter and I'd love to work with him again.

Our band was relatively inexperienced in a professional studio, but Greg kept us calm, listened to our desires, and gave input that cleaned up and strengthened our sound. After that, he was extremely attentive to our requests for tweaks to the mixes until we got them to a point where everybody was satisfied and proud. All-around great guy.

We hired Greg to mix 10 songs and working with him was great. He is extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of production and genuinely cares about the songs. His input was invaluable, and his final mixes were brilliant. I can't recommend him enough.

Greg mixed our LP, and it was an awesome experience. He is a total pro, completely in command of all things mixing, but more than that brought his own strong creative concepts which added greatly to our record. He was totally open, easy to work with, and extremely understanding of our iterations. Truly an extremely gifted mixing engineer.

I have just completed a CD with Greg Abate, whose creative input is felt throughout. Greg's initial mixes showed a great deal of thought, adding surprising elements that my producer and I usually adopted. This resulted in one song after another that were better and more original than anything we could have accomplished without Greg's input.

I have had the pleasure of working with Greg on several projects. He is consistent to take risks that serve the song and humble to receive and execute ideas from artists who have a particular vision in mind. Greg is a great collaborator on projects and is also willing to take the lead when necessary. He is a great asset to my own career.

Interview with Neon Audio

Analog or digital and why?
Both! Why not?
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
I'm a lifelong musician. I taught myself guitar and piano and studied saxophone, drums, and music theory in formal settings. I've been in and around recording studios over 10 years, and have been working full time freelance in music production for over 5 years now.
What's your typical work process?
Wether mixing or mastering, I always try to put myself in the place of the audience and how they will hear the song. This sets my focus on what's best for the song. When my head is bobbing and I'm losing myself in the music, I know I'm on the right track.
Tell us about your studio setup.
I like to use a lot of analog gear because analog lends a depth and dimension you just can't get any other way. Plus I have more fun with analog, which keeps me inspired and creative.
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
Mixing is what I most commonly do, though I also do a lot of mastering work. I enjoy both and like to help potential clients in any way that I can.
