Adi Lincoln

Audio Mixing & Sound Design

Adi Lincoln on SoundBetter

My name is Adi, I'm a Sound Designer, Mixing Engineer, producer and musician. Over the last few years i had the pleasure of working on several albums released both in digital and physical formats.

In 2012 I co-founded Arête Sound Houase, a small DIY independent studio. We are very passionate about art and music which makes it important for us to listen to our clients and not compromise on anything to get the best results. To achieve this, we work 'In the Box' with industry standard plugins and gear allowing us a wide range of options with any genre of music.

Since its inception, I have had the good fortune of working on several releases within the post-rock, shoegaze and indie genres, as both a mixing / mastering engineer as well as a musician and producer.

Interview with Adi Lincoln

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I had an amazing time working with Dan (moniker 'Qualia') on what is probably his most popular album to date. 'Everything is Going To Be Fine' is the zenith of his post-rock output era. I mastered this amazing double album, as well as actively participated in it's production and recording. The album was very well received and to this day, it's one of the few albums i'm most proud of.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently working on a shoegaze/alternative album with a band called 'In Crimson Colours' it's really cool.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yoad Nevo & Daniel Anglister, both are insanely talented engineers and amazing people.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. They both have their pros-and cons, but i find that together you get the best of both world. Digital gives you an infinite amount of options with minimum cost, but it lacks that magic that tubes, transformers and transistors have, and although some of the plugin emulations out there are fantastic, nothing beats turning some knobs and buttons.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I will do whatever it takes to deliver the best results, and see their ideas and vision realized.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The creativity, and sometimes, the challenge. You can never approach 2 songs the same way.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How i would approach their project. I usually break down my work process, and more importantly, emphasis i keep an open channel of communication for feedback and ideas.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That it's easy, and anyone can do it. Although now days it's literally possible to get great results with minimum amount of equipment from your bedroom, nothing replaces knowledge, and knowledge takes time to gain.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I generally start with getting to know them better. Then i ask for some general information about the project, it's background etc. Then i ask about technical stuff, how it was recorded, and finally, I ask about their goals and expectations

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Take you time to view my work and ask me questions to better know if i'm the best fit for your project.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Acoustic guitar, bottle of wine, wine bottle opener, record player, some records

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been working as an engineer for about 7 years now. As most people in the industry, I've started as an intern, and worked my way up to being a freelance sound designer & mixing engineer.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Grungy

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, they seem to have this magic about them and a unique approach to music that will be amazing to be a part of.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Think before you do something, and really try to figure out why you're doing something and what it is you're trying to achieve,

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Alternative & shoegaze

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Listening, both the the audio/music as well as to the client.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: My years of experience and an unbiased ear.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I usually chat to the client before i begin my work to get a better understanding of their goals and expectations. Then i take the rough mix and start setting everything up for the way i like to work. From there i start editing and eventually mixing the track.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I love Andrew Scheps, i think he's a brilliant engineer and his approach to audio is what drove me to work mostly 'In the box'.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
