Interview with Cook Up Records - Mike Wilson
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing, editing and straight forward business.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Any engineer can hit "record" or mix a record. I like to take a hands on approach to each record I work on. Being thorough with directing a singer through every verse, line, and word, doing as little or as much vocal comping as needed to create the most consistent, on par performance possible.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I always like to know what a clients goals and expectations are. The way I approach each project is driven by the needs of the artist. There are a million ways to mix a record and its all up to interpretation and the need of the client.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My personal studio is a great space. Including a large control room, live room, and lounge. With a phenomenal baby grand piano that we use for recording live pianos all the time. Sonically the space is solid, with a great mix translation guaranteed. A combination of great outboard gear as well an impressive collection of in the box plug ins.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: A major portion of my day to day work is detailed recording/vocal arrangement as well as mixing records. I am big on mixing/mastering records that need help. Records that are not necessarily recorded in the best studio or have the best vocal performances are something that I am confident in my ability to mend and produce a final product that can stand next to top quality records.
