Dave Johnston

Producer & Mixing Engineer

Dave Johnston on SoundBetter

Dave Johnston is a producer and engineer from Auckland, New Zealand whose combination of mixing finesse and musicianship make him a highly valuable asset to any project. Dave has developed a reputation for bringing the best out of projects through attention to detail and a penchant for making very musical mixing and production decisions.

Dave can remotely mix your tracks to a professional standard from his home studio, saving you the cost of hiring an expensive facility. He takes pride in producing very tidy mixes that preserve the 'real' sound and characteristics of the band and musical instruments. A drummer and composer himself, Dave has an ear for tight timing and is a valuable contributor to arrangement and performance decisions when consulted.

Although not limited to a particular genre, Dave has developed a name for powerful and characteristic rock mixes, clean pop mixes and is highly valued as a creative producer. Having been through the album production process multiple times on both sides of the glass (as a studio musician and as a producer / engineer), Dave has developed his skill set while working alongside highly experienced engineers, producers and musicians.

In addition to his work as a freelance audio engineer, Dave is the drummer of New Zealand band Villainy, one of the most talked about rock bands to emerge from the country in recent years. Villainy has won the prestigious 'Best Rock Artist' at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards three times, in 2019 for the album 'Raised in the Dark', in 2016 for the album 'Dead Sight' and in 2013 for their debut album 'Mode. Set. Clear.'

Dave is proficient at mixing, editing, vocal tuning & comping and production.
