Interview with Creaky Floor Studio

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: A lot of local singer-songwriters. It's been a blast!

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: An understanding that the emotions and energy get the listeners to connected your song.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: Honesty. A flat rate and a willingness to make you satisfied with the end result.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Helping the little guy get a professional product that can go toe to toe with commercial albums.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: The most notorious is mixing can make a bad song and/or a poor quality recordings sound like a hit. There are A LOT of techniques that I can do to help but I cannot make you sound like a top 40 hit if your not talented. Your ruff mix at the end of tracking should be pretty good. Mixing is not fixing. Mixing is enhancing emotions and energy that are already there.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What are your inspirations for this song? How long have you been performing? What does the song sound like in your head? What do you love and hate about the song? What are your goals for your career? How can I make this process better for you?

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Get to know me and go through the interview process. If I'm not the right fit for you then I'll tell you and help you find someone who is. Not to sound like a hippie but "it's all about the music man."

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Modern, with a bit of old school dynamics.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: New artisst and thoses starting to build a fan base. I'm a fan of music and I love helping others. Nothing pleases me more when I can help those who need a boost in the right direction.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: I can share 2! It all starts with a good song. That's a must. Secondly, get the sounds your looking for during tracking! Dont follow the old saying, "we'll fix it in the mix."

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Rock, indie, and singer songwriter.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Finishing the job on time and up to the clients expectations.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: My sessions are typically setup like a high end 70's studio. The first part of the signal chain is virtual tape-virtual console-virtual EQ and compressors. Then, to the appropriate busses. Next out to the 2 Buss for more, if needed, EQ and compression. Then finally a virtual 1/2 inch tape machine. That is my typical setup but it can change to meet the needs of the song.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: All in the box. Makes for easy recall. I can make tweaks to a mix and email it to you within a hour. For those curious of what's in the box... Cubase 7.5, Nuendo 4, All the Slate Digital plugins and products, Waves Renaissance bundle, Kush audio's Electra EQ dsp and Clariphonic and that's just the main ones I use. From the box we go to the Focusrite 18i8. D/A conversion happens at the KRK ERGO. Then out to the Yamaha HS8's.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: Big fan of early 90's Rock and singer songwriter types. I'm also a fan of current music being produced by the Foo fighters, Mumford and Sons, Jack Johnson, The 1975, The Bad Suns, and many more.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: Mixing professional and self recorded material.
