Gilly's Music on SoundBetter

Troy Gilchrist is a new Upcoming Australian Producer who is making marks in the industry. With 15 years experience of music production and live sound under his belt. Working with some of the all time legends of the industry including names like Jeff Martin, Nick Didia & Bernard Fanning. His dedication and passion is worth your time.

I have developed many skills throughout my career which has allowed me to understand all aspects of sound production. From mixing live sound to working in the studio, to running bands and composing music. From these experiences I have bin able to create my own philosophy and understanding on how to approach sound production from different perspectives. I think this is what separates me from the rest as most mixing and sound engineers have the technical aspects to what they need for a sound to be correct, I find that they can lose the heart to the music they are trying to create. Instead of a piece of music that should be rich with soul and life becomes are mathematical equation and can almost sound robotic. My approach is somewhat more simple I let my ears do the talking. Because in the end your ears don't lie. Even though I do have the technical understanding and experience I am able to find a healthy balance between being creative and also being an engineer. Services I can offer. Producing,Mixing,Editing,Midi Programming,Sound Design,Composition and Arrangement,Session Hire (Guitar,Bass,Vocal and Keys) and lyricist.

Troy was very responsive which I feel is very important. He did suggest me to re record a few things to get the best out of my tracks which completely made sense. Was nice working with you.

Interview with Gilly's Music

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both - I love working in both worlds there is always an application that will work depending on the genre. If I'm working with a band with live guitars and drums etc. Then analogue pre amps and a mixing desk can really help sculpt a live sound. Working with an electronic production then I prefer digital for the cleaner modern sound and the stereo field. Also the options become far greater with samples etc.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: To exceed their vision and deliver a professional product that they love and want to share.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I love the challenge of trying to achieve the clients vision. There is nothing more rewarding when you exceed there expectations and give them something they will cherish.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: Music Producer & Songwriter - 16 years

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: I'm probably a bit of an all rounder. I've spent the last 16 years crafting my songwriting and production skills which has allowed me to explore so many different styles of music production. To be honest I love it all music is just the best in any form except for mumble rap. But my most common style would be of an organic nature such as a Band or Singer Songwriter.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Tool - I just really enjoy their music and feel it would be a challenge for a music producer to get all the elements sounding great, hats off too Joe Barresi he nailed it!

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Record everything as if you're mixing it. Don't have the mindset of I can fix it in post. fix it then.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Most common music I work with is acoustic singer songwriter and rock bands. But I'm open to all genres and enjoy working on new projects.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I am able to understand formulas and arrangements used for music genres regardless if I haven't worked in them before. This allows me to look in depth to how a song should be crafted. I can start with a blank slate and write songs for clients. I can add new parts to music that a client has already produced. I can re-arrange a piece of music a client has already written. I can provide beats for rappers or guitar for songwriters there are no limits. I have plenty of experience working with MIDI which also gives me plenty of options to produce a song to what it needs to be.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: It all depends on the project. I like to get as much detail as I can from a client to ensure I can get the vision they are asking for. It is super important to me to develop trust so the creative process can reach its full potential. I like to keep an ongoing dialogue and updates on progress so the client doesn't feel any time is being wasted. I work intuitively and technically with music. I consider the feeling and emotion of a piece of music is equally important to how it is balanced and sonically sounds, with this mind set I'm addressing all aspects of the music production and ensuring the clients vision comes to life.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Nick Didia who is my mentor and boss. Also Bernard Fanning from Australian rock band Powderfinger who is Nick Didia's business partner.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I do a lot of ghost producing for songwriters, I haven't limited myself to specific genres I like to challenge myself with new sounds and arrangements. Assistant Engineer in the studio I work at. Mixing and Editing
