Interview with Ferdinando Valsecchi

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: Mixing, Mastering, Sound Design, Final Mix, Composing, Editing, Restoring etc.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: I use world class converters from universal audio (with their plugins, as well as the other most famous brand like waves, psp etc.), I have both a reamping/DI interface which is the Eleven Rack from Avid which opens up endless possibilities as for the perfect guitar/bass sound and recording process, as well as the classic Yamaha NS10M-Studio as the industry standard's monitors. Then I have a second pair of monitors (of course), a good variety of microphones, an analog mixer with which I can do analog summing and or "dirtying" and some outboard. The sky is the limit.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: multiforme

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: My ideal of artist is the one I can develop a work-relationship with.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Want to be louder? No need to compress, blend in some saturation ;)

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Just like what I listen to: everything from hip hop to metal and singer-songwriter to classical; there are a variety of works that were commissioned to me that not everyone would believe me.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: The versatility and deep knowledge of my craft.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I bring years of expertise as a moltitude of professional figures such as musician (bassist to be more specific), producer, engineer and what I've learnt in university both from a technical point of view as from an aethetical and reasoned point of view.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: My work process varies from genre to genre and from song to song, but 99,999999% of the time the general structure is: talk to the artist to know its intentions listening to the song until you know it better than the artist itself define it's structure etc gain staging mixing mastering deliver it back and enjoy an happy customer!

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: I'd say everyone and every song (well, most of them at least). I always listen to a wide variety of music, from hip hop to black metal, from singer-sonwriter to classical music and everytime I enjoy both the music and try to figure out the production process, the mix and mastering tricks and treats that the engineers have hidden in the song itself.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Universal Audio Apollo, my bass guitar, macbook, yamaha ns 10, beyerdynamic headphones.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My career path started many years ago, when with my band we paid the 400 euros for a demo that was recorded without overdubs, retakes etc and was not mixed, nor mastered. From there I learnt by myself and then started following seminars etc. As of now, I have graduated from the University of Florence and the University of Edinburgh in Sound Design, earning a first class in the Master of Science.

  25. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  26. A: I'd go with digital, and just a sparkle of analog here and there. Digital is a life and time saver and with the emutations that computers or other units are capable of, there is very little difference...of course if you know where to put your hands on ;)

  27. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  28. A: All of my attention untile they are satisfied in every way.

  29. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  30. A: The fact that it's always the same but it never is.

  31. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  32. A: That everyone can do it. Let's face it, that is true (not for everyone actually, some people would never do this), but it takes time, a lot of time, both for training, learning, but especially to deliver it to a client. I do work 8-10 hrs on a single song, sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the project itself of course, but the absolute best comes with a price. So everyone can do it, but I'm willling to spend countless hours on your songs to get the best out of them, so please, don't be cheap (and don't pay more than what the work if worth too, of course!), I got to eat too ;)

  33. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  34. A: What is the project about? What do you expect from it? Where was it recorded? Are you happy with it right now? How many song there are? Do you want me to mix it, master it or both? Can I have the lyrics? (especially for rap/hip hop, they can be useful to automate things etc.) Are you ready to be impressed? ;)

  35. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  36. A: Search for an engineer which is interested in you work, not one that is interested in money-making.
