Interview with Stephen Leiweke

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Helping people be the best they can be

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: That anyone can be a producer

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: What are your goals for your project? Long term artist goals?

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Make sure you find someone who listens to you and will make your project personal.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I've been working in the music biz sense 1997

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: I take on the style of the artist or band I'm working with. I don't impose my 'style' on them.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: Sara Bareilles - great signer, great song writer, tremendous artist!

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Does the thing your playing conflicts with the melody or the vocal? Then STOP!

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Pop

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Listening and helping people

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Years of experience, a strong sense of hooks and melody. Emphasis on the vocal!!! The vocal is in charge of a track, and needs to be amazing!

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: pre production (song prep) - tracking (band or programming) - vocals - mixing

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: My studio is a full production tracking facility. We can record full bands, strings, choirs, you name it. Lots of classic analog outboard gear, paired with pro tools HDX.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Helping artists and band take their songs from bedroom demos, to radio ready productions.

  29. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  30. A: Both. Because they both have strengths and the both have weaknesses. So let's combine them and have the best of both worlds.
