Jacob Williams on SoundBetter

I will realize your vision for your songs AND add my own creativity— great music is made by combining artists’ unique tastes & talents, and with me, your music will feel better than you knew it could! I play in a band called Spectre Jones and I've also made records in studios big & small, home & commercial, since 2015. Let’s make something new!

GUITARS * BASS * KEYS * RECORDING & MIXING
I'm excited to meet new friends & embark on musical journeys. I love to write & arrange, and I'm also a recording engineer! There are lots of great players here, but when I record guitars I'm always thinking about how the song will work as a whole. Every part recorded should influence how the next part sounds and feels. I know what I like, and when I find the sound & the part, I commit to it! As a collaborator I will listen & seek to earn your trust. My strongest skill is my ability to take your vision for your song and combine it with my musical taste to make captivating sounds and parts that feel great.

I like to use old gear to make new sounds. I work mostly with analog gear and have lots of inspiring instruments, pedals, amps, and microphones in my "palette". All this physical gear allows me to make better decisions, and ultimately record more interesting, rich, and high-quality sounds.

I normally record sounds that are "finished"- I use eq, compression, and effects. Committing to a sound is one of the scariest but most rewarding parts of recording. Making a song is a journey, and committing is how the song leads us to the finish line! You will walk away with sounds you feel great about.

I specialize in indie rock, psychedelic, and retro sounds, but am always open to adding my own style to new genres!

Interview with Jacob Williams

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: "How did you get that sound?" I love talking about gear, and am always be excited to share how I achieve any sound!

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: If I'm recording guitars I'll listen to the song in a few different places, and then go with my gut instincts! I let my creative brain make choices and I don't question it! I'll pick a guitar, amp, and any pedals, mic them up however I'm feeling, and then get my first ideas out. Those instinctual ideas are almost always best. Usually, I end up feeling great, but if not I can always go back and retrack with new sounds until my performance gets to where I want it.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I promise that I will throw myself fully into your song. I want to make something that you like AND something that I like, so you can always count on me to deliver recordings that show I enjoyed making them.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: -What music are you really into right now? -Are there any styles or genres that feel like they're influencing your new music? -What has excited you during this process of writing your new music?

  9. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  10. A: My band, Spectre Jones, is about to start recording our second album. We're self-producing, and I'm engineering!

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: The song is the most important part. And so is actually recording and releasing the songs you write that you like! Get em done before you write your next favorite song!

I just got a new guitar! It's a 90s Fender Duo Sonic, and it feels absolutely amazing playing it through my 1970 Bassman and 1967 Vibratone. New fave.
