Interview with Robert Back

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The Misadventures in Love EP by Lexene was the first time I got to produce an artist from beginning to end. I recorded the beds and vocal tracks in a few different rooms to get the space I was looking for. I got to practice layering acoustic stringed instruments and vocals in the mix to create lush and haunting textures. check out the EP here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/lexene/misadventures-in-love
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You will leave satisfied with your mix, and feel confident to share your music with the world.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I shape the mix for an emotional impact thats right for each song. I use some of Brauer's bus compression techniques to maintain separation and dynamic range. I love saturation and find it's a great alternative to compression especially when a track needs to feel special.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Make sense of everything. Lots of soloing and labelling. Once everything in is it's right place, I can get the rough vibe of each track by establishing a balance. From there it all depends.... and thats where the fun begins!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Treated home studio space with some outboard gear, Hybrid workflow. 2 Monitor Setup.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Put your hands together!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The right type and amount of saturation can add glue and flavor to just about anything. Sometimes I will have an aux track with a Tape Simulator on it that I will send my main instruments to. This provides everything a fat consolidated feel, and can tame some harsh transients on drums and plucked sounds.

A: Rock, Jazz, Hip Hop, Electro-Acoustic, and Pop influence Electronic music
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Vocal Tuning! It's a lot of fun.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Michael Brauer's Bus Compression, Max Martin's formulaic composition. also the experimentation of Led Zeppelin!
