Interview with Krzysztof Kilar

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I will use all means to the end result was perfect.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: Sometimes audience and musicians think that sound comes from mixing console. The truth is, sound comes from its source. If the band play well, instruments are in perfect shape and the songs are awesome, everything I have to do is not to disturb.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Most of sound engineers are freelancers. We are waiting for your call but our calendar can not extend indefinitely so faster you call, bigger chance to get proper person. But anyway it is always make a sense to try. If we don't have time, we will help to find someone else.

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: Ian Nelson

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: Hammock and matches :)

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Incubus - I like their music The Cure, Alicia Keys - inspiring Placebo -great sounding band Justin Timberlake - explanations are unnecessary :)

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Quick reaction, good ear:)

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: Usually I talk to a producer of music and I try to reflect its expectations. My job is primarily to add extra punch and space to the music.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I always start by testing the sound system. I do measurements with Smaart7, listen to music, introduce correction. I am crazy about right audience coverage. When the PA is ready I load up the preset to the console or create a preset from scratch. If the scene does not have a technical team which is working on a daily basis, I check the settings microphones on the stage and start the sound check. If possible, the instruments are checked by technicians and musicians appear only at concert or at the end of rehearsal. When I work with the band on a permanent basis, I use the virtual soundcheck.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I am a sound engineer. I am mixing live sound at concerts (FOH/MON).

  21. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  22. A: Digital. In live sound mixing world there is no time to waste. Working on digital mixing consoles and using digital measuring stuff is much faster, easier and effective.

  23. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  24. A: Every day is different, I can't live without music and I need creative people around.
