I had the privilege of working with Maks for the first time in 2014 and the last time in January 2020 in Nashville. From the very beginning to our latest collaboration, Maks has consistently proven himself as an exceptional talent in the music industry. Maks is not just a producer but an extremely talented musician who possesses an understanding of music and every instrument, including vocals. Working with him was a great experience because he wasn't afraid to push boundaries and give feedback. You can trust Maks to elevate your music to new heights!

Interview with Maks Gabriel

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Several productions and mixes in country and pop.

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: Modern Classic. I like to keep some elements in my productions and mixes more cutting edge and blending them with more raw and organic sounding instruments.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: Chris Stapleton. He's got such a fantastic vocal style. It would be so enjoyable producing his vocals.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: While keeping in touch with your own creative freedom, make sure you're delivering something close to what the artist is envisioning. At the end of the day, the artist needs to be proud to stand behind their song.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: I run Logic pro X on a supped up Mac. I have tons of outboard gear on racks - but i tend to use more pligins these days.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Pop, country and rock.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: Joey Moi, Dan Huff, Hanz Zimmer, Trent Reznor

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Track and vocal production and mix and mastering. I offer these separately or bundled depending on budgets.

  17. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  18. A: One of my favorite projects was a song I co-wrote and produced for the group Honey County. It garnered over 1 Billion streams across platforms and is on the Grammy ballots for Country duo performance of the year 2023.

  19. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  20. A: Jesse Labelle is a fantastic singer/songwriter if you're looking for radio quality vocals or melodies.

  21. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  22. A: Digilog. I think a healthy blend of both is sometimes great. These days it's sometimes hard to tell the difference to be honest.

  23. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  24. A: That I will ensure that they are beyond happy with the way their music and vocals sound.

  25. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  26. A: Getting to create something that will touch peoples lives.

  27. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  28. A: They ask if I know the vibe/style they are going for - I always reassure them if I get it - but I also always encourage them to send me song references so we can really hone in on what they are envisioning.

  29. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  30. A: How long it takes to record a full arrangement.

  31. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  32. A: I ask a bunch of questions. But mostly basics about the songs like tempo, key, vibe, any song references or styles they might have for me to go on. I also like to ask them about their own careers or aspirations. I like to get to know my clients on a personal level so I can make sure I'm on their level when I help them with their art.

  33. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  34. A: I'd just do some research into the producer they are looking to hire. Make sure you like what they've worked on in the past and currently.

  35. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  36. A: My laptop(contains all my useful mix and sound production plugins) my acoustic MARTIN guitar, MY PRS Custom electric guitar, a good weighted key keyboard and my Manley Labs Condenser Mic.

  37. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  38. A: I started playing classical piano and jazz drums as well as rock guitar. I played in multiple groups and for numerous artists from the age of 8. When I was 19 I realized that I wanted to be in the studio and more behind the scenes. I was lucky to meet and impress numerous record labels and music publishers who then invited me to work with their talent. After years of getting songs cut, publishing deals, dozens of TV & Film placements, I'm still producing/mixing and writing songs in Nashville. I'm getting close to 20 years of experience in the music BIZ.
