Interview with Mike Sutherland

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Listen to the work they have done. Go to lunch with them. Figure out if you want to spend 12 hours a day for two weeks or more in the same room with them. Figure out if you respect them enough to listen to them. Make sure your tastes in music are complimentary. Not necessarily the same, but complimentary.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: John, Paul, George, Ringo and George.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I have been recording music since I was 15. I knew I wanted to be an engineer since I was a teenager. I got my first internship when I was 17 and I haven't looked back since.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Practice. And then practice more. And then buy a nice instrument. And then practice more. Then, record.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: Recording drums is something I do better than most people. My background as a drummer probably has something to do with that.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: Most of my mixing work is in the box. I use a lot of Waves and

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: Thrice, The Beatles,

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Mostly, I do engineering and mixing work. On the rare occasion I produce a few songs that resonate with me personally.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: In the pop realm, I really respect Bruno Mars. I think I would have a blast working with him on a track.
