Interview with Ati Piwo

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: It was a personal project tho, but I am so grateful to the universe for being able to achieve my first EP Marimba Profundo. It is a tribute to Guatemala, to all the things I love and to my mother. I represents a lot of my life and I enjoyed every minute of that project.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: On a second EP. This time, I want to include vocals and a message that any person can take to their core, to their soul and heart. I want to inspire people.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Unfortunately, not yet. But soon they will.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I would say digital, because it is practical and nowadays it has such a powerful and delightful sound and quality that you don't miss the analog sound any more.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That they will have a State of the Art piece of music when we finish the production.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That it is self-motivation for me. I enjoy doing it, I improve every time I try something new and I become really good at it. Knowing that I am good without having anyone else to tell me I am is very satisfying and it frees my soul. By now, I should be that confident in other aspects of my life, but honestly: one step at a time.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Many questions, but non of them have relevance here ;)

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That people look at me as the leader and I am not. I am perhaps a proactive person, but we are working in this together so I would love to have the piece of advice from the customer.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What do you want to create? And if they don't know, then it is even better, because the inspiration comes from inside, from the unconscious.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I advice him or her to have some ideas of what they are trying to achieve, but to leave some good space for me to be flexible, creative and come up with the best musical experience and best quality.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A Grand Piano, the best 2 Microphones that ever existed, my Scarlett 6i6 and my Macbook Pro.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been creating music for about 11 years now. I started producing "Happy-Trance" really up-tempo and using most of all samples. I started to get interested in being a famous DJ. With the time and experience I teached myself how to play the piano. And from that point, the career I decided to go for was Music Production and perhaps to be a Soundtrack-Composer for films.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Fresh, melodic, a fusion of nostalgia and joyfulness.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: For sure with Coldplay, since Chris Martin appears to be as I am. He doesn't actually read any musical notes and nevertheless he composes such emotional, beautiful and complex piano melodies. I know that with him I can create something that isn't from this world.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Sidechain using the kick. That brings a delicious come-and-go to the track. It gives space and rhythm.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: On electronic music most of all, my personal projects, but I also take time to work on interesting projects from people of other countries, who don't necessary create electronic music.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring live. I bring a message without words, using the power of great melodies.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I start with a melody and around it I try to create a catchy and groovy beat, some powerful bass lines and from there I start to think of the arrangement. I'm a perfectionist, so I tend to go side-by-side with mixing, editing and arranging. Those stages are all one for me.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: A Macbook Pro Quad-Core i7 2.3GHz , Ableton Live Suite, Ozone 5, a pair of Yamaha HS8, a Scarlett 6i6 Interface, a B2 Pro Behringer Microphone, an M-Audio Oxygen 61 Keyboard and Sennheiser HD380 Pro Headphones.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: The quality of the arrangement and most of all: the melodies and harmonies.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Melody creation, mixing and sound design.

  43. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  44. A: As already said: Melodies and improvisation.
