Interview with Tyler Saderup
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: All of my singles published through Bentley Records. I went from a kid making beats in my room, to a recording artist for a label who produces all my own music.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My personal projects since I am signed with Bentley Records. Along with a few clients who give me a little work here and there.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: no
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: analog if the budget is there. I was an apprentice to guy who was in the industry in the time of the tape machine. He preached analog to me from day one. It gives a sound more life and a warm feeling. There is nothing wrong with digital now a days though. Technology is catching up.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I WILL make you sound better.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Its music. its in front of a computer. can't really complain.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you put my vocals in time? my answer is always yes hahah.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: people think they can send me an mp3 of them singing or rapping over an instrumental and think I can make it today biggest hit. If you give me shit. I can only make it shinier shit. there has to be certain amount of production quality on the clients end if they don't want me to do the whole song for them.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have access to the audio stems of the song you would like me to mix!!! Most first time customers ask for me to Mix when all they have is one mp3 file of the song and another of their vocals. This is just fine if you only want me to touch up on your vocal, but if you want me to completely remix the song I need something to work with. This also helps if all you want is a master but its already over compressed or too hot. Sometimes a producer doesn't know what they are doing. If you buy an instrumental off someone or have created your own, make sure to keep up with a project file or stems of the audio. It will take you a long way.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Just have a strong artistic vision of what you want with a certain project. I like to look into other peoples dreams and aspirations and style. As much as I love being given audio and be let loose to do whatever I want, It will be in the paying customers best interest to have a clear goal they want to achieve with the audio.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Rifle, Lighter, Knife, Pan, and a large roll of rope.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Becoming an audio engineer in general. I have found over time that mixing is what I truly enjoy and can do from the comfort of my house or anywhere for that matter.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Smooth even on the more aggressive songs. always has soul.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Drake. He's just so dynamic. you could put him on any kind of track really.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: compression on vocals should have a quick release. Makes them pop well.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip Hop, Trap, Soul, RnB.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: At this point in time, a tie between producing a song or instrumental from scratch, and vocal editing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Clarity. The ability to adapt to clients and understand the sound they want not just what i enjoy.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I have to hear the song and see what audio files i have to work with. I like to base everything around vocals. If it is an instrumental i base everything around drums.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Running a mac 16 gb ram. Steinberg interface. JBL speakers. multiple keyboards( Casio, Akai).
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My mentor Romeo Williams.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mostly editing and chopping vocals. mixing of course. I've also done a good amount of mastering for a couple people. I've only produced a few tracks for people other then myself but looking to do it more often.
