Interview with Hayden Thomson

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Music is fun, there's a serious and professional side to it but don't forget why you (or your provider!) got into it in the first place!

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: My cans, my Maschine and my laptop. Speakers and DJ controller if there were anyone else there with me.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I've been working in DAWs since they were trackers! Since around 1995 which is when i became obsessed with tracked music.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: My style is urban, funky, raw and punchy.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I would love to work with Break, he's really at the top of the production peak as far as drum and bass goes!

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Keep a notebook handy. Listen through your track and write down ANY notes, changes or ideas you have. When and only when the track has finished can you go back and start checking off your list. Rinse, repeat.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I usually work on urban styles of music (dub, hip-hop, drum and bass/jungle, etc.) but have been known to work in rock or acoustic as well.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I bring myself to the song. That is, years of practice and influence have imbued me with the relevant tricks and sounds I believe to be relevant to the chosen genre of music.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: When remixing I find playing around with parts of the music to be very inspiring, usually I'll have some kind of idea or two within the first few minutes. Then it's building a loop out into an arrangement. Once that's done, I'll play back what I have and let my experience dictate what should or shouldn't happen in the song. Mixing is another story!

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I'm a big fan of the Native Instruments range and have worked in Maschine since it arrived on the scene. I love to work with mobile apps when I'm out of the studio too. I work in the box and have a very stripped back setup, only the essentials.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I'm inspired by the studio nerds of the past and present - King Tubby, The Mad Professor, Madlib, Break and DLR

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Remixing in many genres (hip-hop, electronic/EDM, dub, urban...) as well as mixdowns and mastering.
