Interview with RL Studio

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Recently engineered, mixed, and mastered Joel Forlines - Talis. It was a great two day session and he was able to leave with a cd to be proud of.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My second EP, Guttersoul

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: digital, but if its really important to the sound we can bounce the bass and drum tracks to tape and back.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: do you know your songs?

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: yamaha mo8, tlm 102, pro 40, macbook, hs8 monitors

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: I'd like to do things with the classic studio guys: Bernard purdie, Chuck Rainey, Steve Gadd, James Jamerson, Larry Carlton, George Duke, Jeff Porcaro, Tom Scott, Willie Weeks, Carol Kaye, Hal Blane, Billy Preston, Richard Tee...Etc. Do people still play like that? With those guys on the track, anybody would sound good!

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Don't leave a bunch of high end in the drum overheads.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I write and produce R&B for myself, but with clients it can vary.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Keyboards

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: If its needed, I can play some great feeling keyboards, bass, and drums parts. I play guitar as well.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I have a 24 track digital project studio with some great mics, gear and instruments.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: music: Vulfpeck, Steely Dan, Anderson Paak, Beatles, Al Green, Donny Hathaway, and the list goes on and on. I have about 300 records, 250 cds, and all music is free to stream now.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: tracking a solo artist and playing all the supporting instruments. Sometimes I get to record bands as well, which is fun.
