Interview with KELLR

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I was brought in to work on a record with a country artist who wanted a more electronic/pop sound. I had never done country before (mostly because my stuff is programmed), but we did the track and it turned out great. I learned that sometimes not playing by the rules leads to a great result.

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: The most common questions are about price and workflow which depend on the situation and what the artist wants done.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: The time it takes to produce and mix a song (especially with vocals) is usually underestimated. Some tracks can take upwards of 20+ hours and only part of that is my slight perfectionism.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Know what sound you're looking to achieve and hire someone who fits that. My goal is to always create something cool and marry that to the artistic vision of the artist.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I've been producing for over 10 years and 2 years full-time professionally. I have a background in IT as well, but don't ask me to fix your iPhone.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: In 2 words: electronic hip-hop. In more than 2 words: hard hitting drums, emotional sounds, cool ambiences and atmospheres, catchy melodies, smooth transitions, and a powerful mix.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Creating instrumentals that tap into emotion.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: My studio is a comfortable, relaxed environment with plenty of space and seating. I have a treated vocal booth and a few "all around" good microphones. My production rig is a PC (custom built myself) running Pro Tools and a variety of software plugins and instruments. I can record live instruments (except drums) and also have 2 keyboards available for MIDI or songwriting.

  17. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  18. A: New releases, lining up shows, and various client projects.

  19. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  20. A: N/A

  21. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  22. A: Digital. I don't really know - I'm too young for analog?

  23. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  24. A: You won't pay for something you don't like.

  25. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  26. A: That I'm excited to wake up each day and go to work.

  27. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  28. A: What their expectations are for the song, what are some reference tracks to compare it to, and how they're most comfortable working.

  29. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  30. A: PC loaded with software, MIDI controller, pre amp, microphone, and headphones.

  31. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  32. A: Jack U - they're collectively 2 of the best electronic producers ever to do it.

  33. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  34. A: Don't compare yourself to anyone else.

  35. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  36. A: Electronic, Hip-hop, R&B, Reggae, Pop, Pop/Country, EDM, Dance, Trap, Future Bass, House

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: A unique, hard hitting, powerful instrumental track, a good set of ears to bounce ideas off of, and a strong work ethic.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: When I'm creating instrumentals it's usually done in 2-3 sessions (building the track, mixing/arranging, and final touches/mastering). My sessions with other artists are usually co-writes for one of my instrumentals or vocal recording and/or mixing. I normally do a lot of the mixing work alone so people aren't sitting around doing nothing for long periods of time.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Normally my work for clients revolves around building instrumental tracks - whether that be from a guitar/scratch vocal demo, or a rough work tape, although I do some songwriting as well. I'm also always creating new instrumentals and I have my own releases.

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: Sound designers, really talented instrumentalists, great piano players, and drummers.
