Chris Frick on SoundBetter

Hi, I'm Chris. I am a keyboard player and producer, and I want to help you make a great record. I have been doing remote session work since 2014, delivering high-quality piano and keyboard tracks to satisfied clients all over the world. Let's work together to make something awesome.

I have been a professional musician for over 10 years, performing and recording jazz, hip hop, R&B, rock, indie, pop, singer/songwriter, and electronic music. My goal is to connect with your song to make sure you have a hassle-free experience and receive an awesome keyboard track.

My work is diverse: piano accompaniment for your vocal recording, chords for your beat, Rhodes for your R&B song, piano or organ riffs for your rock/blues song, recording written music or lead sheets. I specialize in piano, Rhodes, and organ, and I can always send MIDI files if needed.

I studied at the Peabody Conservatory, and have spent thousands of hours playing on stage and in the studio for artists all over the world.

I would love to talk with you about your project and how I can help take your production to the next level. I pay close attention to detail and work to make sure you get exactly what you want for your song. I look forward to working with you!

Feedback from some past clients:

I worked with Chris on a piano-driven piece that needed solid timing and finesse. He delivered a gem - one-and-done (one take) and it was perfect. I really loved his work method - he sent a clip to ensure it was on the right track - and it absolutely was! Thanks a ton, Chris. I'll be calling on you in the future.

He always has a quick turnaround time, gives me feedback on my songs, and helps sweeten them to the best they can be. Chris is one artist who is reliable in terms of a quick turn around time and the effort he puts into his work. He is versatile and is ready to work on styles that he is not too familiar with too. I highly recommend him.

Interview with Chris Frick

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: Do you have a reference track that's similar to the sound you're going for? Are you looking for acoustic piano, Rhodes, organ, another keyboard instrument? What feeling or vibe are you going for? Would you like more of a chordal part, or a melodic part? What other instruments will be included in the production?

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: My style is driven primarily by rhythm and feel. Whether I'm playing a gentle piano ballad or a funk inspired clav part, I believe that rhythm is the primary driver of music.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: I would love to work with Esperanza Spalding. I think her music is brilliant–it's creative, emotional, relevant, and it just feels great. It would be an honor to work with her.

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: Alfa Mist, Herbie Hancock, Phineas Newborn Jr, Robert Glasper, Cory Henry

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: I recommend having all of the important information about your project ready when you contact a session musician. Some things that you can include are the BPM of your song, what keyboard instrument you'd like, if you have a chord chart, and any reference tracks or instructions about the vibe you're looking for. Including as many details as possible allows a session musician to ask any clarifying questions and then quickly get to work on your project.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I have played music since the age of four, and have been a professional musician for over fifteen years. I received my degree from the Peabody Conservatory, and have performed and recorded extensively. I started doing online session work in 2014, and it's been a flexible part of my career ever since.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I operate in many musical circles. Rock, hip hop, pop, mellow singer/songwriter styles, jazz, free improvisation, classical music. I enjoy having a steady rotation of different musical styles in my performance and recording schedule.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I begin by listening to a song several times to internalize all the details. Then I typically record three takes in a row. I'll then go back to make sure I'm happy with the part and the performance before sending it off.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I work with Logic Pro, a Nord Stage 3, XLN Audio Addictive Keys Modern Upright (my favorite upright piano sound), and a Novation Bass Station II. Digital recording allows for maximum flexibility and allows me to provide MIDI tracks alongside high quality WAV files.

  19. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  20. A: Digital. It's how I learned to record, and it offers so much flexibility. With digital tools, I don't always have to be in a professional studio to produce great music.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: MacBook Pro, headphones, a Focusrite interface, my Nord Stage 3, and the Novation Bass Station II.

  23. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  24. A: My goal is always to deliver the best possible keyboard tracks for your song.

  25. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  26. A: I am thankful for the opportunity to make music with other artists. Collaboration is the what makes music exciting for me.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Your recordings will never be great if you don't have a good song to record, and your mixes will never be great if you don't record great sounds. Some folks use the phrase "get it right at the source," and I couldn't agree more.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: Most of my session work is either solo piano tracks for original songs, or keyboard parts that fit in a fuller production. I also have worked on a lot of cover songs, creating acoustic arrangements (either solo piano or piano/strings/bass) of popular songs.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Listening. I'm all about getting the right vibe for a particular song.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Creativity, solid rhythmic command, and a style that matches what you're looking for.
