Interview with Box Records Switzerland

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The official theme song for the Romanian football team on european championship. We were part of the production team and we did most of recordings, arrangement, mix and master. Also another project I am proud of is the collaboration with Mario Winans, he is truly a great artist.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A beer commercial (the music is a bit like Mission Impossible style), one new single for a famous pop rock band from Romania, some trap productions for a swiss hip hop group, two new singles for a dance project, some album masterings, some deep house remixes, a project with a famous serbian singer, lots of recordings with young talented artists from 4 different canto singing schools.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Mostly all of them. It is their choice with who they would like to work. We are sure that most of the SoundBetter member do a great job.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. It is the future. We try to emulate the analog, but we will never go back.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: A step forward. Good quality. Enjoyable experience.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That everyday new things are happening. New softwares, new gears, new music style. You can never get bored. We are always busy.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Do you have time for me ? Our answer is always: We will find time. Let's do it.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That everybody can do it, and that everybody can do it the same. Every mixing and mastering is unique, the same with productions, compositions.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What do you see yourself in 5 years :-) just kidding. We tell them that they should not work with us because of our past but because of the potential future we might have together. We ask them to have a coffee together first.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Do not always go for the cheapest solution, respect the provider, work only with people that understand your music project. And once you found them stick with them. The more you build up, the more better results you will get because you also build up a chemistry that can only lead to creativity.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Macbook pro, m50x or dt990 headphones, studio project b3 mic, MPK mini, apollo twin

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: We do this for almost 20 years. We started from having just a computer and some cheap home monitors, not even logitech. :-) We started actually with a dream. And slowly we add new things and achievements to our dream. It was not a easy road, mostly because music industry is changing constantly we always had to adapt. New people came to the scene and a lot of them gave up along the way. We made up our minds. This is our path and we love what we do.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Even we do so many productions in different genres, somehow our clients say that there is a Box Records signature on everything we do. I guess it is the way we mix our vocals and the life we bring to our productions.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: We don't think that a great artist is the one that has the most popularity. We believe in true art. We appreciate true talent. We would like to work with more and more authentic artists and we prefer the young generation, openminded people. There is no particular artist that we would like to collaborate with.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Our company is all about sharing. We offer workshop and webinars to young producers. Hmm one quick tip would be: Forget about trying to learn rules. Just do what your ears tell you to do. And stay away from overproducing. Keep it all simple.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Any type. From commercials to trap music. Nowadays we are mostly focused on dance productions but this can change any second.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Recordings, mixing.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Our knowledge sometimes is our secret weapon. We suggest ideas to our clients. We put our heart into the work we do. Our main focus is a great production.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: We schedule meetings, we like to get to know our clients first. We also work a lot over internet using gobbler, dropbox or splice. At the end of the working sessions we always end up becoming friends with our clients.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: We actually have 3 studios in 4 different locations: Switzerland, Germany and Romania. We are also focused on mobile solutions because we believe this is the future. Our setups include rme, genelec, apogee, dynaudio, uad products. We work mainly with Protools, Studio One, Logic Pro, but or systems have installed also Ableton, Fl Studio, Cubase.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: the owner of Slate Digital

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: music production, mixing and mastering
