Interview with rroederr

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Best of both worlds. It really depends on the project.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I like to work on very different genres. Preferably at the same time. This makes it easier to ignore typical genre boundaries.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: To bring a song forward and catch the listeners attention. There's always a vision in my head how the song should sound and my goal is to reach that point.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I like being part in so many great projects. And I like having the chance to bring the music forward and to point out what is important in the individual piece of music.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: This is very different and depends on the song. Sometimes the production is very good and my job is just to set everything right. Sometimes I have to do more if I feel there is something missing.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: Like probably every sound engineer I started as a musician. Then I recognised a need to do more and got into producing. I went to university to deepen my knowledge and run my own studio in Germany since 2012.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Be organised and know what you want. This helps a lot.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Very dynamic. For me a good mix means that all elements know their role and interact with each other.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: First of all stick to the basics and listen to the music as much as you can.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: I work very disciplined. To be on time is very important for me. My main goal is always to satisfy the artists needs. These days I usually get the files via the internet and am in contact with the client all the time.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: It's a hybrid studio. I got a lot of analog outboard gear which I mainly use for tracking. There are a bunch of different preamps (i.e. the Chandler TG Channel) which allows me to choose the best hardware for every situation. For mixing and mastering I usually go in the box these days. I like to simulate different listening situations by using different monitor setups which I find very useful. Of course there is a collection of selected instruments and microphones of all kind.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I'm hopefully inspired by all music which surrounds me. But if I had to name one engineer whose work I really appreciate I'd say Andrew Scheps.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Generally I do everything one can do in a studio: recording, producing, mastering, writing music etc. But my main thing is mixing records. That's where I got a degree at university and that is what I love.
