My name is Malakai Linden and I am a music producer, engineer, DJ and educator based in New York! I went to NYU for Music Technology and have been working as a music creator, educator, and facilitator for the past 8 years.

Most of my time is spent working on my electronic music project MALAKAI, focusing on combining elements from trip hop, glitch, bass music and IDM.

The rest of my time is occupied doing other music and sound related things like recording and mixing music ranging from classical to dubstep, as well as audio recording, mixing and editing for film. I also teach music and recording skills to all levels.

Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Bea Go
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You will be satisfied with your track or your money back! I can't do magic tho ;)
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I have been mastering a good amount of music for a record label called The Rust Music, most recently a 25 track compilation featuring a wide range of electronic music. Additionally, I work as a freelance audio engineer through Dubway Studios in New York where we work on a host of different podcasts, TV shows, movies, music and more. I also teach private music production lessons in the New York City area.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Combination. I like to use analog gear in minimal ways on the front end which sometimes helps introduce a nice warmth, but I take care to leave room for digital processing later!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your goal with your project and how can I best help you get there?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have an idea of what services you need and ask questions!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When you mix its essential to dial in the sound of the mid range of frequencies. One of my favorite techniques involves putting a filter from 300Hz-3kHz on my mix bus to allow my ear to focus more attentively on any problems in the mid range. Once I get my mix sounding really nice with that filter, I turn it off and am always left with a better result than before!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic - (Glitch hop, Downtempo, Trip Hop, Dubstep, Drum n Bass), Hip Hop - (Instrumental and Vocal), Jazz
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing, mastering and sound design.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a few spaces that I work depending on the job. My home studio is where I do most of my creative work - writing, beat production, DI recording. Additionally I work out of another space with fully treated rooms and top of the line speakers for mixing and mastering purposes. I use Ableton Live and Pro Tools alongside my favorite plugins from Fab Filter, Waves and Tokyo Dawn Labs to get your music sounding great!
