Working with Coltrane was easy and very pleasant. I felt respected and appreciated through the process. Negotiations were painless, and the project was fun to work on.

Interview with Coltrane

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: My debut album, and a couple of projects with some friends.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both. Two is better than one!

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: The encouraged creativity.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: That I don't make "real" music because it's made on a laptop.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: Would you listen to this song if it wasn't your own?

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Happy, upbeat, feel good music.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: If it sounds good.. why not??

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Pop / electro pop / indie / electronic.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Vibes.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: iMac or MacBook Pro. Maschine MK2. Handful of midi keyboards. Lot of akai controllers and launchpads. Fender hot rod deluxe. Couple of pre amps. Upright wurlitzer. Couple guitars and basses. I run everything through my Apogee Duet 2, or Focusrite Safifre 40. And I use my Adam AX3s or Yamaha HS8 monitors depending on the sound I'm going after.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I like music that makes me feel happy and excited. I think it is very powerful to be able to influence an audience of people's emotion and make them happy. Happiness is awesome, so why wouldn't you want to be happy, let alone make others happy. For that reason, I am truly inspired by artists like Odesza, Cashmere Cat, Lido, Weezer, Louis the Child, Chance the Rapper, Public Enemy, Electric Light Orchestra, The Beatles, and more.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: Maschine. I start everything in maschine. I fully compose a song, and arrange in maschine. Then, once everything is where I want it to be, I bounce it all down and import it to Ableton or Logic. From there, I continue to add transitions, smooth the scenes together, polish sounds, finish the arrangement, and mix and master.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Song production, vocal tracking/vocal production, and mixing/mastering.
