In 2020, my then-10-year-old daughter recorded an album of her classical piano music to raise funds for a charity in Vancouver, BC. We were totally new to music production, and we were so lucky to have found Shane!

Shane was patient to walk us through the process, answer our questions and help us find the sound we have in mind. He is knowledgeable, not only of mixing and mastering, but also of the characteristics and nuances of the acoustic piano. He is kind, professional and communicates extremely well.

You will be in good hands working with Shane!

As a mastering engineer, I can say I always look forward to hearing Shane’s work when it come in. He‘s very involved in the mastering process with the artist, and that’s a testament to how much he cares about his work as a producer and engineer. Great sounds, great guy, and very professional.

This isn't his first day in the studio. ;) Shane was recommended by a local producer/engineer. There's always a bit of underlying anxiety when you start a project with new producers. We've had an amazing time collaborating and working together in the studio. Professional, down to earth, lots of laughs and lots of hard work make up this talented guy. Being away from the studio scene for awhile, I had a few vulnerabilities; he made me feel right at home. He has a brilliantly, keen ear and openness to ‘try new things’ and experiment to capture the best production; but working together while doing

I am blown away by Shane's capabilities as a producer and an artist. Every idea, hope, dream, and nuance that I hoped to express in the song we worked on, Shane has delivered on; and has done so in a way that is both imaginative and efficient. Shane is highly reflective, self aware, calm, and communicative. These are only a few of the reasons why working with him has been inspiring, and a total blessing! Whether you have been writing and recording for years, or are just starting to find your sound/vibe as an artist, I would highly recommend Listening Party Recordings.

Shane helped me to craft my very first single and went above and beyond to teach me through the entire process, sharing his knowledge of production from recording to distribution. His is an incredible musician and will help you to produce a polished, professional track.

I worked with Shane on a voice-over recording that I was coordinating from NYC for a short film. Shane was responsive, helpful, and professional. He set everything up on his end so all I had to do was virtually enter the session and work with the artist to lay down the audio -- it couldn't have gone smoother. It was a pleasure working with him! I'd recommend Listening Party Recordings to anyone looking to do any sort of audio work, either in the Vancouver area or anywhere else in the world!

Shane oversaw all the audio post on our commercial - original score, sound design and mix - and did an amazing job. Pleasure to work with, amazing result, he's a great collaborator.

Shane is an absolute wizard. He's been with me since I produced my first tunes to mix and master, as well as help with production. It was awesome and I got so much praise on the production that I kept going back!

For my most recent album, I teamed up with him to cowrite and coproduce the whole album from demos to finish. Shane has brought so much to the album- he has great ideas for hooks and lyrics, and he brings production that just really elevates all the material while still capturing the spirit of my demos and writing. He's fantastic and I can't recommend him highly enough.

Interview with Shane Stephenson

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: You will have a song that you are proud to share.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: Music feels really d*mn good.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: People often ask if I can record them, and while I have experience doing that, I would rather equip artists with the tools to record themselves and focus on creating the music. If the song absolutely needs amazing sounding live instrumentation then we outsource; there are so many fantastic recording studios and session musicians out there. Locally I will work with a vocalist or an artist and do an in-person session to get into a good flow (pandemic permitting that is!)

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Find someone who could be both a friend and a teacher.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: 1. Fishing Net 2. Knife 3. Hammock 4. Sun-block 5. Signal Flare Can't make music if I'm a goner 😬

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: After playing piano as a kid, I started on learning to make electronic music on Propellerhead's Reason 5 (you couldn't even record vocals into the software yet). I was 11 at the time, and throughout high-school I joined bands. Wrote songs, played shows, and practiced production. I started producing for others at 18 and have been doing it for a decade now.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: Pop that makes you dance, rock-out, and generally forget your troubles. Challenge me to put a smile on your face.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Kimbra. I think her vocal work and stories are incredible. She is an artist that oozes authenticity and emotion.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: If you're a singer, try playing a variety of characters. Explore mouth shapes, tone, intensity, emotion. Make up names for each voice you come up with. When you bring a whole cast of characters to a vocal recording session, you're going to be ready to build a fascinating soundscape that compliments the song, no matter what the story is. A music producer can achieve this by taking a vocal performance and using formanting, space, and saturation. Need more aggression? Add distortion! Want to make things more masculine and fantastical? Formant those vocals down (Little Alter Boy is the best for both!)

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Various forms of pop!

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: bringing the emotion out of the artist and their music through conversation, sound sculpting, and arrangement.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I'm someone who can communicate with an artist and find the vision for their song. Then I help them get it there.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: We always start with pre-production. I want to know what/who inspired your song and then we're off to build a palette of sound. (Usually a playlist of favourite music and a session full of sounds we like). Once I have an idea of where we're headed, I'll make a production/mixing draft of the song based off of your vision. We'll go back and forth on some revisions then the song is complete! I usually like to have a call after and help talk through release plans with the artist. I feel we all need a little help with accountability sometimes.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: I work from my home studio the majority of the time. In an acoustically treated room you'd see beautiful dark stained wood desk my friend helped me make. On top of the desk you would see a pair of powerful studio monitors, a macbook, an ableton Push 2, arturia 88 key, a couple synths, a UA apollo, and two microphones clipped to the top. 5 guitars lay ready to my left, and a collection of boutique pedals hide beside them. Sprinkled throughout the cozy room are all sorts of things that make sound. Also there's plants, a lot of them. Also a d20 (if you know, you know.)

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: I'm a big fan of both Indie Pop Rock and Electronic Music artists...but really my tastes are from all-over. Here's a bunch of names that hopefully paint you a picture: The 1975, M83, Phoenix, Young the Giant, Daft Punk, Chvrches, Madeon, Porter Robinson, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, The Japanese House, Mark Ronson, Kimbra, Dua Lipa, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, Quincy Jones, Perfume Genius, Sigur Ros, Coldplay Music is great.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: I help artists authentically create and market memorable songs in a world of short attention spans and shiny superstars. I want them to have no doubts about delivering those songs to their fans, so when an artist teams up with me, we work together to carve out a sound that they can feel at home in.

  33. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  34. A: When I worked at Echoplant Sound Recording Studio, I brought my band at the time Derrival in to work with my mentor Ryan Worsley on recording the whole thing together. Having my friends and bandmates there, with my teacher, and getting to work in a really cool studio space was such a developmental experience for me as a producer. It was the first time I could really dive deep into my creativity and the whole album turned out great. We signed to an independent label and got millions of plays on our music as well as placements on TV and Film - and now I get to do this every day!

  35. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  36. A: Huge projects from both Xana and Adam Mah, keep an eye out for them!

  37. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  38. A: Brock and Elisa from CPS Mastering! They are total nerds for audio and music. Having worked with them dozens of times I can confidently tell you that you will have a pleasant experience and realize how good your song can actually sound. https://soundbetter.com/profiles/25850-cps-mastering

  39. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  40. A: 85% Digital. I want to be able to make changes for my artists quickly and precisely. I don't find this stumps creativity, and in fact lets me take things further. Digital music creation has gotten so powerful that songs and music can still have tons of flavour and be made entirely on a computer.

  • Ice Cream breaks 1 million playsJan 11, 2022

Derrival - “Ice Cream” hit 1 million streams on Spotify. I remember back in 2017 when I was challenging myself to produce a beat every day and I made the core vibe of the song with the title something along the lines of “Chill beach day eating ice cream vibes." I think this was at the start of the “Lo-fi Hip Hop to study and relax to” craze. Very proud of how it turned out.
