The Animal Farm on SoundBetter

We are a music production and artist management company specialising in guitar music. Whether you're a singer/songwriter or a heavy rock band, we can produce and mix your records affordably and efficiently in our own studios in central London.

The Animal Farm has been active for 12 years and we have had chart entries in all major markets on labels big and small. We work out of our own studios in Bermondsey. Built around Protools in an old biscuit factory, our studio is a creative haven of natural light and state of the art gear.

We are an independently owned music company, offering a wide range of creative and business services to artists and songwriters. We produce and mix records and write songs in our two recording studios in London. We manage artists and songwriters, run an independent record label and a publishing company and a booking agency.

In short, we make music and take it to market, looking after the well being and interests of those involved. The company has been in business for over a decade.

If your idea is to build a career in the “music business”, please notice how music comes before business.

The Animal Farm produced and mastered one of our songs called Bet my soul. The results are amazing. They could really identify and work with the best elements of the songs, create sonic textures and make the song more appealing ans interesting. Thanks guys!

Interview with The Animal Farm

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The band Esteban's singer Steven went to Florida on holiday and realised at US immigration what his occupation was: a musician. Being able to help bands achieve a dream like that is proud stuff.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Little Brother Eli, The Dabhands, Danny Starr. All emerging UK talent that hopefully you will know about soon.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I'm new to this, but will fill it out as soon as I learn more about the site.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. You don't ride a horse to work, do you?

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: It's going to sound great, it will be fun and relaxed. It will do what it's supposed to do.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Being able to help an artist capture their emotion on a sound recording and have it come back at them sounding better than they could have dreamed possible is a great way to make a living.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: - Why is it so expensive? - It's not, but it certainly is more expensive than a local demo studio. They can't compete with us on the quality of the final product, just like we can't compete with them on the price.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That we can't magically transform a bad recording into one that sounds good. We can. But it won't sound like the artist. The world is full of good sounding records, but not many that sound like the artist who created them. We don't produce our vision, we produce the artist.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Why are you making this record? What do you want it to achieve for you? Are you sure you want to make an entire album, wouldn't a single be a better idea?

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Guitar bands, singer/songwriters - anything with the six string in it. Also, a lot of mainstream pop mixes.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: We're actually really fun to work with! Our mixes reflect our personalities: they leap out at you!

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: The experience of being working songwriters for 25+ years gives us a musical perspective to the work we do. Musical architecture is important.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: We switch on the gear and start listening....

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: We do everything in Protools, with a big array of preamps and mics to capture the sound. A lot of great gear has been accumulated over a couple of decades of working in music. Whatever sound you want, we've got it. The live rooms were built by Studio People and can accommodate a full live band. We get natural light and you can see the London Eye from our windows. Our business complex houses a cafe/restaurant, a wall climbing room and a gym.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: We are inspired by musicians with chops. Hearing someone who can blow it out is exciting, equally as exciting as someone with a unique personality, a signature sound. We believe that sound originates in the fingers.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: We produce and mix singles and albums for wide variety of signed and independent projects in the UK and abroad.

  33. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  34. A: Making the best record, the right record, is the only thing that matters. Invest into it. Look for people who get what you do and let them encourage you to be who you are.

  35. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  36. A: A guitar, an egg shaker, a water purifier, a Swiss army knife and a baseball.

  37. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  38. A: We started in the early 90s as songwriters, then had a 10 year band career and now, for the past 12 years, we've been growing the company. In addition to the record production side, we manage artists and run a label/publishing company.

  39. Q: How would you describe your style?

  40. A: Impactful, dynamic, cut to the chase,

  41. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  42. A: I'd like to hear an in form Frank Sinatra singing...

  43. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  44. A: Go for big changes of dynamics and have the artist's personality at the centre of the track.
