Kristian Knudsen

Mix, Session Guitarist

Kristian Knudsen on SoundBetter

Studying the art of sound. High level of musical knowledge, musicianship & theory.

I am currently studying to become a sound engineer (recording, mix & master), though I have several years of experience with recording and mixing music. I have roughly 9 years of experience as an active musician within the prog/rock, metal and electro pop/rock genres - and still counting. I've played many kinds of music throughout the years and I'm a diverse musics fan and a enthusiast of good sound. I keep a high technical skill, but still believe that music is art - with embracement of the flaw and finesse. It should be noted, that I'll match the style; loose and psychedelic on one track and tight and fast on another - you'll be the conductor.

I provide high quality mixes, with a high sense of if something should be buried or highlighted (if either is the case!). My personal preference is creating powerful mixes, but with a high dynamic range and air - but I will take every word of yours into serious account! You are the one who knows what sound you want.

I keep my deadlines & I put a great deal of effort into a healthy communication between myself and my customers. I take on every genre which is put across my path.

You can expect:
• High musicianship
• Extended knowledge of musical theory and use of such
• High quality tracks, recorded trough high-end gear.
• Analog or digital recordingchain (set aside the DAW)

Sincerely
Kristian

Interview with Kristian Knudsen

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Currently I have an movie assignment; foley and soundtrack.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: I am the new guy on the block at the moment, so I don't know anybody - I hope to do so soon! Therefore this answer will be updated.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Analog because of the warmth. Although digital is more convenient, no plugin does at this time sound like the analog original.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: A professionel product with no shortcuts.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: The fantastic feeling I get everytime I hear a sound.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Q: Can you make it sound like (insert random band name here)? A: If you sound like it, I assure you it will sound like that in the end.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That I make loads of money.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What's your reference? How would you describe the sound you're looking for? What's the end product? How would you like files to be returned and at what quality (88.2 or 96)?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Do it! I'm able to provide both quality and unique sound, without overdoing so.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: My guitar, my amp, my record-player, my speakers and my effects board.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I've been playing guitar for about 9 years, been recording and mixing for 5 of those. I've been recording here and there while studying "the art of sound & music". Before that I only played live gigs and had a lot of fun with that.

  23. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  24. A: I recently recorded short EP which consisted of 2 songs. The drums were recorded in a large industrial building (with infinite loads of natural reverb), the guitar in a suburban house and the bass were DI'ed. When those parts came together it was MASSIVE. I was both the guitarist and soundengineer on that.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Progressive...

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Bill Bruford, simply because of his music.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Make it sound good at the beginning and get that recorded - then you'll know how to deal with every issue which sould arise.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Rock - progressive rock lately.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Chords with wide invertions.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: A huge sound.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: For mixes is typically goes: Listen, balance, embrace the gold, repeat. For sessions with no sheet music or anything, I listen and match the intention.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Right now it's a simply setup with a RME Fireface interface into Pro Tools 10. My main amp is standing next to me, alongside a piano.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Robert Fripp and Alan Parsons have to be metioned, but they are among MANY others.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Mostly mixing and guitar/bass/drum tracking. Ambient music movies.
