Jake Spencer

Production, Mix, and Master

Jake Spencer on SoundBetter

Absolute control over every facet of audio imaginable. Creative, absolute, affordable, and dependable.

Born and raised between a drum set and a guitar, I've has been obsessed with all things music since 5 and all things audio since 15. I produced two amateur electronic albums before attending Recording Workshop in the Fall of 2014 and interning with Bear Creek Studio in 2017. My studio is a project Mixing and Mastering studio that has dealt mostly with my own productions. These personal productions lend themselves heavily to a different look at the electronic music scene. I like to draw influences from all different genres and eras of music, especially the 80's and today. My production style brings a strong knowledge of popular electronic influenced radio tunes and the methods of mixing required to compete with any chart topping song. Whether I'm just putting the finishing touches on your idea with a solid mixdown or remixing your song to give your audience something new that's still from their favorite band, I will bring something creative and modern to the table while maintaining professional quality.

Interview with Jake Spencer

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: The biggest misconception I hear is from people who want me to do remixes for them. A remix is often times no easier than an original production. No one wants to hear the same song with a different drum beat, I like to strip the song down to almost nothing but what is recognizable about it, and then rebuild my own song from that.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: What is your end goal? Did you have some reference tracks in mind when writing this piece? Are there any creative effects that you want me to add to the song?

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I began learning to produce EDM when I was 15, and I attended audio schooling at 18. I kept it as a hobby until I interned at Bear Creek Recording Studio when I was 21. I am currently 22 and this is my first full year of trying to turn it into a career.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, JBL LSR308s, Audio-Technica ATHM50s, Alesis Recital, Image-Line FL Studio 12, Cockos Reaper, Huge Library of VST Plugins (ie Synths and FX), Dual Widescreen Monitors for ease of workflow, Powerful Windows PC

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: It combines my two biggest passions, music and technology. I get to spend the whole day doing something I'd never imagine living off of! I'm just spending each day how I would anyways!

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: "Can you make me sound like (Insert Artist Here)?" Sure, but let's talk about why you want that sound and any other routes we feel would be beneficial to your project.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: My Computer, Scarlett Solo, ATHM50s, Alesis Recital, Zoom H4n

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Constantly developing.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Step away and think about what your product means and needs to convey rather than what the radio is playing.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: Cutting edge production techniques and a knowledge of what creates a sound that keeps listeners coming back while implementing things that your listeners will find as new and intriguing.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: As a percussionist, I'll usually start with drums or a groove with the bassline to create a rhythm. I'll usually find myself subconsciously humming the melody along after that. After the song is written it undergoes a simplified mixdown and I tweak all aspects of the production. I then export the stems of the each track and go through a solid non fatigued mixdown and master in the same project.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Production, the creation of any virtual or processed pieces of a finished product (ie, sound recording, song, soundtrack), as well as the arrangement of the piece.
