Interview with Panorama Mixing & Mastering

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The "love me right - Arkum & Cassio" collaboration. I had mastered for Cassio previously who was based in Canada. By chance he was collaborating with an artist here in Melbourne, and we all teamed up including a mixing engineer based in LA (IRKO) to work on this project. A large international collaboration and the proof is in the pudding the track turned out amazingly. My role was as a mastering engineer.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Creating value outside of the studio services I provide. Contributing to discussions and sharing knowledge.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, not anyone I know. But just browsing the other service providers there does appear to be a great deal of quality of what's on offer.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Not phased, a good tradesman never blames his tools. I feel comfortable working effectively with both technologies.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: No frills, big lingo or trickery, just plain honesty.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: MUSIC.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mastering is some sort of audio alchemy that is the be all and end all... I'm a facilitator of your vision, I'm here to support it and embellish it, but I can't create it.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: HOW DOES THIS MUSIC LEND ITSELF TO BEING PRESENTED TO THE LISTENER? WHAT ARE THE TRAITS/ASSETS OF THE MUSIC? ARE THERE ANY SHORTCOMINGS OR CONCERNS OF THE MUSIC?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Ask questions; working compatibility comes in many different shapes and forms. In the saturated market place there are GREAT engineers, but what truly makes the success of your project great is your compatibility with said engineers and services.

Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started at The Aviary Recording Studios in Melbourne where I worked assisting in the recording and production for El Moth’s and Jungal’s albums under the guidance of Fraser Montgomery. Following this experience I assisted at Edensound Mixing & Mastering in East Melbourne. There, under the guidance and mentorship of Martin Pullan I worked and attended in the post-production of records by acts such as Deep Purple (re-mixing of live performances ‘72-’74), Jimmy Barnes (Tape Transfers), Julia Henning and Andrew Haggar. It was here where I developed as an engineer, honing his ears, technique and skill set for mastering and mixing.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: When I'm working on a project I try to be as transparent as possible, that's my style transparent. But not only in my application of audio, but also in my application of communication. Not frills, just open and direct discussion and communication.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Daft Punk, their attention to detail is phenomenal.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Use your ear, not your gear.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Communication, communication is the key to unlocking the potential of a project.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am often inspired by people who "tell it like it is" these people include, Tony "JackTheBear" Mantz and Matthew Weiss
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Our mastering process involves a collaboration between the engineer and the artist. After receiving the final mixes, we will discuss and collate information(either in person here at the studio, via email, on the phone or Skype) for the project to help formulate a brief. This brief informs us and articulates your wishes for how you're looking to finalise the project through mastering. The final sound, tone and presentation of your music to the public. Once a brief has been developed we quality control(QC) the mixes to make sure nothing unpleasant has slipped through the mixing stage and to ensure that the material provided can achieve the results you're looking to seek in your final master. Once the final mixes pass the QC, we schedule in a date and time to master the record, which you're more than welcome and invited to attend at no extra cost, during our normal operating hours.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: In the studio, I am most often mastering records.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: While the studio see's a range of styles from rock, pop, ambient, jazz and big band coming through the doors our most common genre/style of music that we work on is electronic dance music.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: We not only bring experience and expertise, but our speciality is bringing your vision to the table, the ideas and goals that are in your head and translating them onto a final master.

A: The studio utilises a hybrid analog and digital set up, allowing us to access the best of both worlds when working on a record.
