Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both -- they each have their place. I prefer to track with nice gear and mix ITB. Hardware emulations are just so good these days...
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Are you Dave Pensado? I typically say yes.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What artists do you like? Do you have a vision in mind for your mix? What features of your music are most important to you?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Choose someone you want to work with. Lots of people have skills, and there's a ton of talent out there. You want to find someone that likes your music and will make it shine.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: The best 5 instruments I could get my hands on -- a Strad, a Steinway, a Martin, an upright, and a Ludwig. Why would I bring a Fairchild if I can't plug it in anywhere??
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Lots of pizzazz, a dash of sparkle, a smidgen of glorious compression, and just enough attitude to make you do some jumping jacks.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Great song, great arrangement, great performance. If you don't have those, then you're probably working on a Nickelback record.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: If there's an acoustic instrument involved then it's my thing. Could be singer/songwriter, folk, gypsy, or whatever--if it is made of wood then I'm good! (Terrible, obvious rhyme.)
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'm realy good at speling.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My musicality. No two people hear music the same way. I just happen to really like the way I hear music!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: A whole range of people from performers to producers: Itzhak Perlman, Dave Pensado, Fab Dupont, Hilary Hahn, my violin teacher growing up, same with my piano teacher, Coldplay, The Mellomen with Thurl Ravenscroft (look them up, but don't judge me!).
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Remote mixing is the bulk of my work, but I can also send you great violin, viola, guitar, and bass tracks for your song.
