Matt Boudreau on SoundBetter

I've mixed Alanis Morrisette, Green Day, Death Cab for Cutie, Florence and the Machine, HE WHO CANNOT BE NAMED. The Samples, Cordova, and Domes of Energy. My goal is to brings clarity, power & strength to your songs, help you sound competitive and help you make something that will last. Instagram @matt_boudreau Web: mattboudreau.com

I've been in bands, toured, and tried my hand at being a rockstar. I've had six-figure major label deals, video budgets, and tour support in the days of analog. In 1994 I began my journey to the “other side of the glass,”; trading drumsticks for faders. That journey has taken me through amazing recording experiences with many well-known and lesser-known artists. I’ve never looked back since.

I've produced, engineered, mixed, mastered, owned a few studios, and restored audio.
After 29 years, I now focus on mixing and mastering in Stereo and Dolby ATMOS (immersive/Spatial audio)

I'm based in the San Francisco Bay Area but work with people around the globe. Whether you are a self-funded artist or a major-label artist, I'm here to help you finish a record you are proud of.

Matt did a great job again. He manages to make a track that is not 100 % perfectly arranged sound good.

Matt has managed to bring the last percentages of warmth, transparency, and depth into the mix that I have always missed. It sounds really fantastic.
This was not the last mix.

Matt helped me through the technical stuff with ease and I got him the files and the session data. He work on this song and sent my song back in a way better place than when I sent it. He mixed to the song and brought out the sonic quality of the instruments. Matt also injected creativity into the mix which I really like. I have been listening to my mixes for a long time and I am so glad to have Matt take a swing at it; very happy!

Matt was great! He had a quick turn around and was very responsive. He's very reasonably priced and the end product sounded great. He sent me my files and I had one slight change which is made quickly and sent back with no additional charge. I would definitely recommend him!

Matt’s work speaks for itself and I can attest to the fact that he really knows his stuff! Not only does he have a keen sense of what the song needs, but he is also able to articulate well how to get that vision across properly. Highly recommended!

Matt is without a doubt one of the best sound engineers and producers around. His attention to details , incredible knowledge and creative inputs are really special. When we put out our first EP produced by Matt, people thought it was a major label release with a massive budget cause it sounded so good.

I've had the pleasure of working with Matt on a few projects - I've hired him as sound mixer, a recording engineer, and he played the drums on one of my tracks. He's really good at what he does. He has a great ear, and is very patient and professional. I've always been very happy with the finished product and the process of working with him is easy and fun. I look forward to working with him on future projects.

I've worked with Matt on several different projects and the reason I kept going back is because of the atmosphere he creates! He is so fun in the room, he has killer insight/thoughts/feedback, he really allows the band/artist to play around and take their time creating something, and I've always been thrilled with the final product! Not to mention, get him behind the drums because the man slays on the kit.

Interview with Matt Boudreau

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: The monitors I use are PMCs. I control the monitors with a Grace M908 monitor controller. I love the Universal Audio stuff so I use an Apollo 8P with two Octo Satellite boxes. I mix using Pro Tools Ultimate. I'm mixing 100% in the box for instant no problem recall ability. My plugins are from Universal Audio, McDSP, Softube, U-He, Slate, Valhalla, and Massey. My mix room is tuned and is well treated so that my mixes translate well to the outside world.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I produced, engineered and mixed a record for the band The Samples called "Rehearsing for Life". It was one of the hardest records to work on because we built the record from a set of demos that the band had not rehearsed. I t was so rewarding because of how it turned out. The record is called "Rehearsing for Life".

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I think very highly of my peer Robert L Smith. He's such a nice guy and real professional.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I like to think I bring sonic strength and muscle to a song.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: A set of monitors I know well, a laptop, convertors, DAW, and UA plug ins.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Anything Rock and all it's sub genre's plus Country, Americana, Jazz.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I always start by listening to the rough mix to get an idea of where things are at. Next I go through a discovery process by listening to individual tracks to assess their strengths and weaknesses. After that I just dig into the mix to make it come alive.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: What format do I need the files sent in. I always say send me either consolidated WAV files that all start at the same point in the DAW timeline or send me the session file.

  17. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  18. A: Digital becuase as long as the meal tastes good nobody cares what kind tools you used to cook it.

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: I promise to take your project seriously.

  21. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  22. A: I love taking people's music that's in pieces inside a DAW and assembling it and shaping it to have energy and draw others in.

  23. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  24. A: I'm not sure. Every artist has different amounts of recording experience and some really understand mixing and others are completely baffled by it.

  25. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  26. A: I like it when clients send me reference tracks they like. As long as there is some aspect of the clients music that is similar.

  27. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  28. A: Make sure when you send me your session it's not missing any files. That is the number one problem I run into to. Clients sometimes are not aware that their files have been spread across the internal drive and their music drive. It's always best to learn where your files are located for the song file.

  29. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  30. A: I started out as a drummer and transitioned to the other side of the glass. I have been involved in record making as an audio engineer since 1994.

  31. Q: How would you describe your style?

  32. A: I adapt my style to suit the music. I always do what I think the song needs rather than what I personally want to do. The song is my boss!

  33. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  34. A: I would love to work with the Foo Fighters. They are a great bunch of musicians who know how to write a song.

  35. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  36. A: If you don't have a ton of recording experience and you are recording yourself I always recommend recording without any eq or compression and to leave plenty of headroom (in other words, don't record really hot signals).

  37. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  38. A: Listening.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I'm greatly inspired by the mixing of Tchad Blake, Craig Schumacher, Vance Powell, Andrew Scheps, Chris Lord-Alge and of course the great Bob Clearmountain

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: For Soundbetter clients I concentrate on mixing since it is not limited by geography.
