Interview with Jeremy Gonterman

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: The thing I like most about my job, is helping to shape an art. Music is the only universal language in the whole world, and can be expressed in the most artistic ways. It is my job to help you shape that sound, and it is the most satisfying thing!

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: My typical work process includes making sure I have all information from my client, first and foremost. I want to get everything I can out of you to make sure that I will return with the EXACT product that you are looking for. Then, I dive in, Mixing and Mastering your song to the best of my ability, and returning it to you with a professional sound!

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: Many musicians from many different genres inspire me. To name a few, I would say Jason Richardson, Dream Theater, Woody Shaw, Issues, and Childish Gambino. As for music production professionals that inspire me, the answer is a little simpler. Joey Sturgis, Joel Wasanek, and Eyal Levi are definitely the guys that inspire me the most.

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: "Can you make this song sound as loud and fat as professional recordings"? Of course I can! That is my job, and it is accomplished through both mixing and mastering, which is why I like to take on both forms of post-production for a track/album.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That Mixing Engineers can fix a bad song. We are just as invested in our work as you are. We can't fix mistakes that were made during the recording process, but we can do our best to make the sound we were given as good as possible!

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I promise to be affordable, someone who is easy to work with, and someone who will help you achieve your musical desires!

  13. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  14. A: Currently I am working on Mixing and Mastering a Jazz album!

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: Digital (with analog simulation). Let's face it. The world has gone digital. There's nothing wrong with recording into an interface and sent to a DAW. Thousands of professionals do it every day. That being said, nothing can replace that analog sound, and that's why I always have a sim in my mix!

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: My Computer, my set of plugins, my A7X's, my HD650's, and my Audio Interface!

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: What is your style? Do you have any reference material? What was the recording process? What are you wanting to get out of the mix? Tell me a little bit about yourself!

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Find someone who is willing to work with you. If they're not, it's their loss. They are the one's losing out on perfecting art. Keep trying, and don't settle for anything but EXACTLY what you want!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My career path is Mixing/Mastering Engineering. I am currently progressing in my degree at university, and am headed towards making this my full-time career.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is clean and loud. I want to give you that professional sound that everyone is striving to look for!

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I like to work with any artists. I'm a people pleaser, and I love to make people happy, and give them what they are looking for!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: ALWAYS give a DI of your guitar/bass track to your Mixing Engineer. This gives us the flexibility to tune the sound to what will fit in the final mix!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on EDM and Rock Music, but have the experience to work with any genre!

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is getting an ear for a mix that my client wants. Based on reference mixes and information that you give me, I have a talent for achieving the mix you want.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring 4 years of college-educated experience. I have worked in many different scenarios, and have culminated enough experience to work in multiple fashions.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: My studio setup includes a pair of Adam A7X's, a JBL sub, Logic Pro, and many of the Industry Leading Plug-ins (ex: Waves, Slate, etc.).
