Charlie is one of the most talented Producers I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Her approach is extremely precise and she manages to get the absolute maximum from any musician, especially myself. I have come away from sessions once I have heard the end product and been astounded with the quality of the production and depth of sound. Also Charlie is a dream to work with and I couldn't reccomend her more highly!

Interview with Charlie McClean

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: My main base of operations is my studio in Berlin. I work mainly on Logic, running UA convertors, Genelec monitoring and a range of additional outboard. I prefer to work largely in the box for mixing for portability and convenience, but when there's the opportunity to take a more physical, analogue approach I'm always keen. Outside of the rig, I like to use real instruments as much as possible in my productions - I have a range of keyboards and controllers, guitars, basses, a lot of interesting percussion, and other instruments I play and sample, including sax, cello, harp, flute and other peculiar woodwind!

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: I'm a producer, songwriter and mix engineer -

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I like a mix of both - it's totally dependent on the project, different things suit different music.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: To bring care, diligence, acute attention to detail, and sincere commitment to their project, irrespective of their budget or level of success. To be reliable, easy to contact and communicate with.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: No two days are ever alike, and I get to do what I love all day every day - it never feels like a job!

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Every day, try to make your own samples. Record and mess with every noise you can make, in your studio, your house, in the street, you never know what might make a rad snare drum or weird lead sound.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: An open mind - I have a lot of experience in a wide range of genres and styles, and I firmly believe that one can never tell when or where inspiration will come from, so if you bring it all to the table, you have endless tools at your disposal.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: As a producer or engineer I like to get to know the artist and find out what makes them tick, what drives them to create and what inspires them, as that will inform the nature of the record, whether I'm making beats, arranging for a film, working with a band, or giving vocal production. And when writing songs or arranging, the same thing applies - every session, every artist is completely different, so for me flexibility and the ability to work with a given situation is the key to success.
