Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

A: Very proud of the last 2 Betty Who records. The Valley i came in towards the end and helped drag it across the finish line when everyone was kind of beat. I helped bring some new songs and new energy to help everyone get reinvigorated. and the latest self titled i executive produced and love how it turned out.

Q: What are you working on at the moment?

A: Rozzi, Betty Who, Pretty Sister

Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

A: Myah Marie. She is one of my favorite collaborators hands down!

Q: Analog or digital and why?

A: both. also it depends on the music style. Software is getting so good it's hard to deny, but i don't deny there's a certain soul in some analog gear that hasn't been replicated yet.

Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

A: That i will always give do my best work.

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: i love the fact that from the time i wake up to the time that i go to sleep there is a possibility that i will create from thin air something that never has existed in the world before. thats pretty cool to me.

Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

A: That its glamorous.

Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

A: who are your biggest influences? what records do you love the sound of? which songs of mine do you like the sound of? I want to get the most detailed picture possible of where they're trying to get to so i can best help them to get there

Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

A: my computer and 4 dongles. lol. but seriously. my computer. a guitar. apollo twin. midi keyboard. headphones

Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

A: ive been doing this about 12 years. I was the lead singer/ songwriter of a band signed to Motown Records in 2008. From there got experience touring, co-writing, producing. Soon after signed a Publishing deal with Warner / Chappell in 2010. That introduced me to many more songwriter, producers and other artists.

Q: How would you describe your style?

A: id call my style Z-Funk. My strongest asset in production is my sense for funky and how something grooves and feels.

Q: Can you share one music production tip?

A: choose the right sounds

Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

A: I do lots of pop learning R&B or funk. But it varries. When im working with Betty Who its VERY pop with a hint of 80's nostalgia. When im working with Rozzi it leans much more organic neo-soul pop.

Q: What's your strongest skill?

A: my strongest skill is my CAN DO ATTITUDE ;)

Q: What do you bring to a song?

A: I bring authenticity and uniqueness. I love writing things that haven't been said, or something that's maybe a little cheeky or risky? Like if there's no reason for the song to exist, why even do it!? i love for songs to be special and have a unique purpose in the world and i try to encourage every artist i work with to express who THEY are.

Q: What's your typical work process?

A: I Usually start with the song. I build out a skeleton track while we work on writing song. I like to get a good feel of what sonic elements resonate with the artist. After that first session i usually spend some alone time perfecting the details of the track, then back and forth from there with the artist until its done!

Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

A: Studio set up is pretty simple. Im not really a gear head to be honest. Ive just found that too many toys to play with can sometimes be distracting. I have a few great guitars, a few vintage keyboards (Juno-60,DX-7, Bass station)great set of studio monitors, every plugin-in known to man and an awesome vibey space. What more do you need

Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

A: My inspirations come from so many different places. I grew up studying the greats like teddy Riley, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Dr. Dre and even Lil Jon in my early years of making beats. Later on i developed a love for alt / pop/ rock producers like Eric Valentine, Ross Robinson and John Feldman. Around 2010 i started learning from some great electronic producers through my time in the studio writing and singing hooks with them. I've learned much of what i use now in mixing and mastering from gleaning small tips and tricks from artists like Madeon, Adventure club, Mac J and Hotmouth.
