Rob Townley

Innovative session guitarist

Rob Townley on SoundBetter

I'm an innovative guitarist and I'm available for session work. I have a natural talent in writing riffs and can come up with new and inventive ideas at will.

I'm extremely versatile and creative, and have lots of experience in coming up with ideas to enhance a track.

I can also work remotely as I have my own home studio. I can provide creative guitar parts - rhythm or lead - for your tracks, either directed by you or I can write new parts to bring something unique and memorable to the mix. If you're looking for something different on your album, something that will add colour and depth - please get in touch!

Prices from £75 per track.

Interview with Rob Townley

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on a single for a pop band recently and they weren't sure what I'd come up with, even if they needed electric at all. Once they heard the guitar tracks they were over the moon and have pledged to use me again. That makes my day really, knowing that I've made a difference.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working on two singles and working on my second album. I've got a video shoot next week for a new album launch.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not as yet

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Jury's out on that one... for guitar both work for me.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to provide you with guitar tracks that will enhance your track.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That fact that I can make a difference to someone's track, and that I'm helping to make music that will be heard around the world.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: mmm not sure, I just get asked to 'do my magic'!

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: You won't regret using me, simple as that. I can provide references from past clients and producers if required.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Probably an acoustic which wouldn't warp in the sun! An electric, amp, a few pedals I guess.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I've been playing for many years. Set up my home studio a few years ago and have been doing sessions ever since.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Innovative and creative.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: Anyone really...

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: From a guitarists point of view; always get the best sound you can before any post production is applied.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Usually pop/rock tracks.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Coming up with unique and creative parts. I always try and get way from the standard chord process, much preferring to experiment and come up with ideas that provide more colour. Always do what's best for the track.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: Something memorable - parts that work with the track to enhance it. Catchy riffs, melodic phrases and harmony.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: No real process - just listen to the track then start laying down parts. I find I can come up with parts almost immediately.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: My guitar rig runs into an Audient preamp, then into ProTools - simple but sounds great.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: To many to list really. I really like guitarists like David Torn, musicians who break the mould and just do something different.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: Mainly working on pop/rock tracks where some guitar parts are required to lift the track and make it stand out.
