Worked with everyone from Usher to Daya. Also, ask me about my vintage synth collection.

I'm a songwriter, producer, pianist and musical director. As a producer and songwriter I've worked with: Rodney 'Darkchild' Jerkins, Usher, Toni Braxton, Usher, Philip Lawrence (Bruno Mars), Mary J Blige, Robin Thicke, Tamar Braxton, Kenny 'Babyface' Edmonds, Queen Latifah, Daya, Eric Benet and others.

As a pianist and musical director I've toured the world with: Christina Aguilera, Toni Braxton, Patti Labelle, Kenny 'Babyface' Edmonds, Colbie Calliet, Natasha Bedingfield, Nicole Scherzinger, TLC, Sean Kingston, Brian McKnight, Jason Derulo, NKOTB and TLC.

***Songwriter and producer for the Netflix Movie Musical 'Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey'***

My songs were featured on the hit Fox TV show 'Empire' and 'Star', songs produced and written by Rodney 'Darkchild' Jerkins and myself.

I also wrote a big song for Disney in 2021! Look up 'You Are The Magic'.

in 2017 two songs I worked on were on a Grammy nominated album for 'Best Gospel Album', co-writing and co-producing on Tim Bowman Jr.'s release 'Listen'.

I have many cuts in Korea, Japan and China, mostly in R&B/Pop but also in Jazz.
I also have a big analog synthesizer collection... lots of Moogs and other good stuff.

Davy is beyond dope. He is a killer pianist, arranger, songwriter and producer! He's so dope I recommended him to Rodney Jerkins and now he is Jerkin's right hand. Don't let the good looks fool you, he's no pretty boy in the studio.. he can be as clean or as funky as you need! Davy really is the best of the best!

Interview with Davy Nathan

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: The clearer your vision is, the better the product will be! It makes my job easier as well. Also, don't be afraid to invest in your own music! I've spent well over $30,000 (and counting) into my own projects over the years.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: Minimoog, MemoryMoog, Logic ProX, TLM 49 microphone and a grand piano.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I've been doing this since I was 5. Moved to Boston (from Israel) at 17, went to Berklee College of Music, and have been going since. Starting touring in 2004 (with Brian Mcknight) and quit the touring life 4 years ago. Been writing and producing full time since.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Kanye, for the creativity.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Take your time recording vocals!!! I usually will record 10-20 takes per section of the song (10-20 verses, 10-20 choruses etc) and then comp the best take.. before tuning and time adjusting (if needed). I pay a LOT of attention to the vocals.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Pop, R&B, Singer/songwriter, Americana

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Crafting a song; lyrics, melody, production, sound design and overall presentation.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: Big sound! and the highest level of attention to detail. Also, I love great songs. So the songwriting will be of the highest level.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: First of all, I'll say this: At the end of the day, this is YOUR song. So you have to be really happy with it, so my job is done when that's achieved. I make sure everyone I work with love the finished product. If I'm just producing, I like to find out what the artist is going for. What's the song about, what's the direction musically and sonically. I then start producing and send the artist the first minute of the song (fade out on verse 2) to make sure that the direction is what you're looking for. If I'm writing and producing, then I like to find out everything I can about the artist; what are your influences, what you want to talk about, what your references are (what song would you like yours to sound like). And again, I keep the artist in the loop at every step of the way.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: Logic Pro X, Apollo 8, DynAudio LYD8, TLM 49 and did I mention my synth collection? Lol Minimoog, Memorymoog, Prophet 5, Moog Rogue, Moog Prodigy, Juno 60, Roland SH-5 and more coming soon (I have an addiction clearly)

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Michael Jackson, Sting, Miles Davis, Pharrell, Timbaland, Kanye West, Jeff Bhasker

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: My work changes from day to day. Sometimes I'm hired to just produce one song or a bunch of songs; EPs and albums. Some days I write the song with the artist and/or a topliner and then produce it (I work with some incredible topliners, let me know if that's something you're interested in). Some days I'm hired to play piano and/or keyboards on peoples songs. I have a grand piano at my studio, and an extensive piano sample library, as well as many soft synths. Also, my pride and joy is my vintage analog synthesizer collection.

  25. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  26. A: Yes - check out Krysta Youngs, she's one of my main collaborator and is an amazing topliner.

  27. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  28. A: Making a song come to life. When all the instruments start 'jamming', it's like magic.
