Interview with JB Lamont

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I work with a lot of indie artists but my favorite is Michele Zaccone. She had written an album worth of singer songwriter songs just vocal and acoustic guitar parts. We got together and crafted an entire rock album out of it. We co produced the album and I did all the audio engineering. We added bass, acoustic and electric guitars, keys and I played drums and guitar. I then mixed all 10 tracks. I then had it mastered in LA. I really love collaborating with other talented individuals! Here is an article write up in mix magazine about one of the songs. https://us1.campaign-archive.com/?u=2f57d0113d49f70228c22214d&id=e0f31e4114

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I just finished 10 hotel suite sessions with a variety of artists at SXSW. I turned a hotel suite into a fully functional multitrack recording studio. I did the same thing last year as well. It was such a pleasure to engineer as well as edit and mix these artists. I don't do much audio engineering these days, just mixing.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I like to mix music that has that analog vibe but editing and mixing for me is better and more flexible in the digital world.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: To do my absolute best to realize their artistic vision and hopefully elevate it even higher for them!

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love getting something raw and bringing it all together for the artist in a polished and concise way.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Do you mix only particular genres? No I will try to mix them all!

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That this has to be a really expensive expense.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: How large is the session and what is the sample rate? Is there special plugins that may need to be baked into the track if they need to be in the song that I may not have.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Manage your expectations, especially if your tracks weren't recorded with the best equipment or are not perfectly recorded or performed. A lot can be done to get good sounds but nothing is perfect.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I am a multi-award winning Film editor for over 21 years. However I have also been a recording musician for longer then that. I started with tape then through many decades it is now a computer and a interface.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: I try to give a track the punch and impact expected from a modern track but while still adding that vintage warmth that we all know and love.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: The Foo Fighters! They are one of the few real hard rock acts left that are true rockstars. Also they just simply rock!

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Please have the client properly label and organize the session before sending files.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: I have worked on mostly Pop/Rock, Singer/Songwriter and Hard Rock.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: I love creating a solid rhythm section with big drums, thick bass and big wide guitars.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I can bring depth, width, thickness and balance to a track.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: 1. get the stems or session and rough mix from the musician or producer. 2. Organize, cleanup, edit, grid etc. 3 mix the track. 4. Get feedback from the Client and make revisions. 5. Bump it out for Mastering.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I am an in the box mixer with lots of plugins especially vintage emulations as well as modern mix plugins. I mix on KRK Rockit 6 and Iloud Mini monitors as well as KRK KNS 8400 Headphones with Sonarworks reference 3 software.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: I love the large sounds of Chris Lord Alge and his brother Tom Lord Alge. They get such huge sounds and clarity within their mixes. I also love the mixes and all around knowledge of Andrew Schepps, he is absolutely amazing!

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: Taking the raw recorded session and making a solid, cohesive and well balanced mix for them.
