BASS: I am stylistically versatile but I most excel in the melodic style of Paul McCartney and what you might hear in an Aimee Mann, Elliott Smith, Jon Brion song. I love playing waltzes. I sometimes use my Fender hybrid jazz/PBass and sometimes use a keyboard bass, depending on which sounds best with the particular song, or depending on your preference. My bass goes through the A-Designs Pacifica preamp into the Tube Tech CL1B compressor and then is fattened up with the Empirical Labs FATSO EL7x.

VOCALS: In this area I am a one trick pony, so before hiring me make sure it's the trick you want. My vocals are soft, dreamy, mellow and wispy and always multi-tracked. Great for background vocals. When you hire me for vocals I will deliver 5 tracks of lead vocals which will be consistent enough to be stacked and typically another 5-20 tracks of harmonies and/or oooohs and ahhhhhs. I can come up with my own backing vocal parts. And you will not need to tune my vocals. My chain is the best in the biz: Neumann U67>DW Fearn VT-2>Tube Tech CL1B. Sometimes I use an A-Designs Pacifica preamp instead of the Fearn. My voice tends to sound good on dreamy pop, shoegazer, electronica, and 60s girl group songs.

If all you need is a double-tracked lead vocal I can do that for $150, but I recommend "the works" with all the layers for most songs. You will get your money's worth.

Andrea Perry is a great melodic bassist who added dimension and depth to my composition Golden Future Time (Beasts of England) for my Evidence Concerning Apparitions album. Outstanding ear for parts, great tone, solid playing.

Andrea is one of my favorite songwriters/musicians (this includes The Beatles, Radiohead, Jeff Lynne, etc.) Her bass playing is definitely reminiscent of 60's McCartney/Jamerson. Super melodic but with great modern pop sensibility. Her vocals are insane. If I could I would hire her to sing every song I wrote. Whimsical, beautiful, emotive.

I would HIGHLY recommend Andrea Perry for production, bass, vocals and composition. I have hired her dozens of times over the years and she is absolutely brilliant! Generous with her vocal stems and always pitch perfect. She is one of my favorite bass players on the planet, her bass compositions are off the hook. A stellar talent, hire her ASAP!

Interview with Andrea Perry

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Clint Wells for GUITAR. And Scott McPherson for arrangement, production, strings, ragtime-y upright piano, pop piano, Brian May style guitar (and also many other styles of guitar). They are both stellar musicians. The cream of the crop.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both because they each have their strengths.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: What do you want it to sound like?

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Provide musical references, try to know what you want and communicate it as well as possible.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: mac book pro, apollo twin, U67, electric guitar, acoustic guitar.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: As a bass player I excel in bouncy pop tunes that want a McCartney style melodic bass. But I work on all kinds of things.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I started my career composing for games and producing indie CDs. I then started doing jingles and writing songs for television and film placement. I also master voiceovers and do some sound design. I've been at it for nearly 2 decades.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Knowing what a song needs to make it more compelling to listen to.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Keep working on it until it feels great and nothing bugs you.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: Originality and a discerning ear and an ability to not step over the lead vocal, but to enhance it and make it the center of attention in the song.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: Focus, listen, relax and get it done.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I've got a nice combo of vintage analog gear and digital stuff like plugins and virtual instruments (lots!). I've got a vintage Neumann U67. Gefell 295s. DW Fearn and Pacifica Preamps, a distressor and a Tube Tech CL1B for compressors.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Producing, composing, bass, keys, guitar, vocals.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: too many to name from long ago to now in almost every genre.
