Interview with Apollo Sound Production

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The A Silence Within EP I recorded last year. I produced, engineered, mixed and mastered it. It came out sounding better than I could've imagined. And they were stoked on it too, which is always a good thing.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A solo project EP. Working on mixing at the moment.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not sure.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both have their use. It depends on the sound I'm going for.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I'll make sure they are 100% happy with the end product.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Meeting new people and making new friends.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: "What are your prices?" and I always say "It depends on your project."

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The amount of time things take. I've found out many artists think a song can be tracked, mixed and mastered in a few hours.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: • What do you know about the recording process? • What style music? • Who are your influences? • How many members? o How many guitar players? Lead and Rhythm? o How many vocalists? Male/Female? Sing/Scream? • What’s the drummer’s set up? • Who is the main songwriter? • What tuning? • What have you done before? • What are your expectations? • How many songs do you want to record? • How many songs do you have written? • Do you need/want writing help? • Do you want additional production? Synths, orchestra, bass drops, percussion, vocal harmonies? • Are you open to arrangement changes? • Live tracking/Overdubbing? • Raw or polished? • What are some of your favorite sounding albums? • Are you okay with drum sample replacement (if needed)? • Real amps/FX processors/amp sims • Are you okay with one guitarist tracking all rhythms?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Practice! Be as prepared as possible if you're about to go into the studio.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Schecter 7 String, a laptop, my interface, headphones and my POD HD Pro X.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Went to college and got a bachelor's degree in Music Technology. Been taking recording seriously for about 3 years now.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: More on the raw side. I don't like over processing or over editing, but I really like a clean, professional sound.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Between the Buried and Me. The level of musicianship is incredible.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Learn to do things multiple ways. Don't rely on one technique for things.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Metal and Hard Rock. But I've also done singer/songwriter stuff and hip-hop.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I feel like my strongest skill is mixing great sounding drums.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I like building a relationship with my clients and almost become a temporary member of the band. I like discussing ideas on how to make the song better, whether it's adding something or taking something away. I like finding ways to take a song to the next level.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Pre Production is very important. I like to have some sort of recording of the song before hand to familiarize myself with it and create tempo maps. From there I record drums, then guitars, then bass, then vocals, then any keys or synths or post production. Then I mix and master.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Currently a small bedroom studio. Pro Tools 12. 16 inputs (Enough for live drums). 5 electric guitars, an acoustic and a classical. Peavey Half Stack, Line 6 POD HD Pro X, 2 Keyboards. Plenty of gear to get creative with.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Recording, Editing, Mixing and Mastering.

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: Adam D, Andy Wallace, Joey Sturgis, Matt Goldman, CLA, David Bendeth.
