Have involved RED as a mastering, mixing, and producer for several projects in the past couple of months; he mixes and masters well, while paying close attention to client wants/needs in each process of our project. Great engineer!

Interview with Redza Ramzan

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: In August 2017, I successfully completed recording and editing two notable audio books in the Malay language. The total duration of both audiobooks combined, after editing and mixing is close to 30 hours. I am proud of this project because I singlehandedly finished the project myself, which took almost two continuous months of re recording, editing and mixing. I was the recording and mixing engineer for this project.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I recently launched a local record label and I've been handling most of the audio post production (mixing and mastering)

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don't personally know any of them, however, soundbetter is home to some of the top audio professionals in the world.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: A bit of both because I don't have a trust fund. Digital is much more convenient and cheap but nothing can beat the true analog sound.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will give my 100% in trying to help the clients achieve their end goal.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Being exposed to different types of new music from all around the world.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: They always ask me how fast can I do it and I always tell them within 3 days.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I'm a wizard that can make a bad mix sound good.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Where would you like to release it and what type of mood and feel do you want in the end product?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Know what type of sound that you're looking for and try to visualise the end product that you require.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My computer, my speakers, my interface, my 1176 and my 1073 pre amp.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've always wanted to be a producer but I fell in love with the work flow of mastering and how intricate and precise mastering can be. I've been doing this since 2010.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Clean but also vintage.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Skrillex because he is considered the king of sound design in today's music world. It would be interesting to see what would come out of the studio whilst in a collaboration with him.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Trust your ears and make sure your ears get enough rest in between sessions because the more your exhaust it, the more you'll assume it sounds good. Always take your time.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Hop hop, R&B, EDM, commercial pop. Mostly top 40 stuff.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Mixing, mastering and knowing what the song needs.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I always try to impart my own sonic signature without going overboard with it. Not too much but not too little to let it go unnoticed.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Listen and listen to visualise the sonic character and type of sound that fits the track.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I run a full digital studio and I mix and master mostly in the box. Depending on the track and the sonic signature I'm looking for, I would patch them through my outboard gear. Analog saturation is still the best.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Bob Katz and Skrillex. Reading Bob Katz's book has helped me improve my mastering tremendously and Skrillex has inspired me to produce more music and not give up.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Mixing and mastering.
